I had my 1911 out the other day, and noticed what appears to be a crack on the slide release.
After checking it out, it appears that it is cracked clear across the widest part of the slide release, about half way through the material.
I have never seen this before. I am trying to figure out what could have caused this. Is it common?
Any information would be appreciated.

It is an old (early 80's) Michigan Armament. It is a factory part. It is a very well made pistol.
I do not think that they used MIM parts.
A rather strange part to crack. I am concerned about the part breaking clear in half, which may or may not happen.

It is probably a cast part, not MIM, but replace it anyway.

I am sure that my slide release will look like the one on the Kimber pictured very soon if it is not replaced.
I have seen 2 slide releases now that have cracked or broken.

They were once made out of machined forgings - and for good reason. I suspect the one in your gun is an investment casting and the metal didn't flow just right and left a seam. Broken slidestops are not common, but they do happen. I have seen one USGI that cracked, and two others that I believe were investment cast. In any case, replace it as soon as possible.

Yes,my Kimber slide release broke just like esheato's and they sent a replacement within the week.I promptly traded it back to the original dealer.tom.

I have a Wilson Master grade 130. Made out of a brand new Colt Series 70. I had it custom built 20 years ago. Went out to shoot it the other day, slide stop snapped off inside the frame. So..yeah, it can happen, to Colt parts, MIM parts, cast parts. Everything can break.
