A local shop has one of these I've been drooling over for a while now - may soon get a hunk of my tax refund money. Anyone have any experience with the .460??

I have a 629 6" that's been to Alaska with me twice as a backup carry while fishing (never been near a bear yet, but ya' just don't know up there). This seems (obviously) more potent plus it just plain looks good.

I have 3 of them. Great round and is a real power house. I am also a 500 Mag fan, I have 2 of them. :) I am planing on adding a 5 inch 460 to my collection.

Go for it, I'd choose this gun over the .500 simply because of it's versitility. I don't own one, but I assume it would be a fun gun to spend a tax return on. If you want one, go ahead and buy one. Besides, it's a Smith. What else can you want?

To Redhawk1: Why in the world would you have two .500's and 3 .460's?!? Ok, maybe the .500's are a snubby and a full length barrel? But why have three .460's?

You got it right about the 500 Mags, one short barrel and one loan barrel. The reason I have three 460 mags is, I bought two 7.5 PC model S&W 460 mag that are 1 of 500, and are sequentially numbered. I have one with a scope for long range shooting and one with a Match-dot from Ultra-dot for up close shooting. The Encore was just for fun, I had a 454 Casull barrel sitting around and it was just a boring round so I decided to rechamber it to 460 Mag and install a muzzle brake on it. Now I want a 5 inch 460 Mag. Why, because I can. :D

I'm doing good to buy ammo for my .460 and "The Hawk" keeps buying .460s. I'm doing something wrong...(g)

King, when I gave up drinking and smoking, I took on gun collecting and shooting. But I find guns to be a hole lot better for my health. :D Also have an understanding wife. :what:

460 V Revolver

i understand drooling over but but dont understand why you havent bought it yet. i just bought the 460 XVR Revolver and cant wait to pick it up. and i have a big group of shooting buddies that are buying me lots of ammo for it and one friend that is making me reloads just to use it.

So, how is the recoil on these things. I read in one gun mag (yeah, I know- huge grain of salt) that because of the way S&W did the rifling and the weight of the gun the felt recoil is comparable to a mid-range .44mag. IF that is true, this may just be the ultimate in big-bore, big-power ultramags. Again, IF that is true, I just may need to put one of these on my list for my camping bear defense gun.

chaim, recoil of the 460 Mag is actually very mild in my opinion. It is the muzzle blast that is more than normal. I own three 460 Mags and think it is one of the best rounds going. JMHO. :D

Gotta agree w/ Redhawk. I've got an 8 1/2" .460 and the recoil is pretty managable. My wife has shot them, but prefers the .454's. She says the .460's hurt her wrist.

I like the versatility of this gun. Also the trigger is one of the best I've seen in a factory revolver.

Hey Redhawk, I'm thinking of putting a Nikon red dot scope on mine. One of the 4 dot models. I'd also get the Warne mounts for it, so it doesn't slide. Do you think the Nikon will handle the recoil?? The only reason I'm semi-hijacking the thread is that it'll give info for others too.

I love my 460XVR.It is much more enjoyable and less expensive to shoot than my 500.I am also trying to decide which optics to put on it.Leaning towards a Leupold 4 x28mm.

rnr4me, I did a lot of shooting with my 500 Mag when they first came out. I blew out the dot in a Millet, Leupold Gilmore sight, and on my Aim point. I then bought a Ultra-dot 1 inch tube and put it on my 500 Mag. I have well over 3000 rounds on the Ultra-dot and not one problem. I put a Ultra-dot Match-dot on my 460 Mag and have quit a few rounds down the tube with it on and not one problem. I have not tried the Nikon red dot, so I could not answer you question. But I know from experience that I will always use Ultra-dots on my big bore handguns. Hope that helped. :D

damascusblade5, I have shot a lot of pistols and I am a big Leupold fan, as a matter of fact 95% of my rifles wears a Leupold and I have over 30 Leupold rifle scopes. I have tried the 2X and 4X Leupold EER scopes, but did not like the black out. I always found it hard to get on target quick with the 2X and 4X scopes. That is why I went to the Bushnell 2X6X32. But the Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x32mm Handgun scope is great, but you will shell out some big bucks for it. But you may find the Leupold 4X works good for you. :)

Yee Ha. Uncle finally gave me my money back and this bad boy came home with me tonight! Now I'm going to be counting the minutes until I can get to shoot it Saturday. I own a packed gun safe full of hardware, but can't remember the last time I was so excited about getting a new gun.

I've accumulated about 200 rnds each of .45 LC, .454 and 100 .460's. If my hand is not numb after I shoot it, I'll post the results. Now . . . to scope or not to scope is the question I'm split over.

You are going to have a blast (literally) Saturday. I coach a high school baseball team so my shooting is now limited but I am planning a ground hog hunt Sunday with the .460 and shooting stix. Can't wait!

I love my 5" 460! Recoil is similar to the longer 8 amd 10" guns however muzzle blast and flash are really something! I tried the CORBON 200 gr DPX and their 325 Bonded Core load. The 200 gr loads has a very large but very cool fireball. The 325 is a nice load and had minimal muzzle flash. Nice gun........I like it more than my 4" 500! Chrono'ed the 200 at 2100 fps and the 325 at 1475 fps.

Captain, why do you like the 5 inch 460 Mag better than your 4 inch 500 Mag? I have a 4 inch 500 Mag also and was thinking of getting the 5 inch 460 mag.

Too Much Fun

Have had my 460 for a week now and had it out 4 times, shooting a 300 XTP handload and the Hornady 200 SST. I have put around 200 rounds through it. It is one of my new favorite guns, I still love the 41 mag, but need to find more time and ammo to spend with the XVR, Go get one, Greg

Redhawk where abouts in DE are you located. I live in northern NCC, I have considered a 460. the problem is where to shoot it?????? clubs I belong to limit the use of magnum ammo due to concerns about the backstop and distances are limited.... I could probably shoot it with 45 colt though.... Hmmmmm

Master Blaster, I live in Magnolia. I shot in Maryland at the Suddlersville Range. No restrictions except no 50 BMG's. We have a 200 yard rifle range I shot my 460 Mag at. We also have a 50 yard pistol range, but the 460 out grew it quick. :D
