My father-in-law gave me a recipe that came out of the reloaders 47th edition, 130gr SP bullet, 42grains IMR 4895 and will be shot from my 270. Anyone else ever used this recipe and if so, how did it work out? He chimed in, since i was looking at buying the 243 for my son and he suggested using my 270 with that load data, until my sons rifle comes in. Any thoughts?

4895, 4350, 1000 are all good rifle powders. If your gun likes it you will have to see for yourself. If the charge is within the listed min-max you should be good to go.

The Hodgdon Load Data site lists a charge range of 43.0 to 46.9gr IMR 4895 using a 130gr Hornady SP bullet.

If you're really looking for light loads suitable for use by young shooters take a look at the data provided by Hodgdon for their H4895 Reduced Rifle Loads. They list low recoil loads for the .270 using light bullets and pressures under 30,000 CUP. I have tried those loads in several calibers and all were light and accurate...

The 270 is SAAMI registered at 65,000 psi.
The most common bullet for the .270 is the 130 gr.
I have shot 9 mule deer between 400 and 500 yards with 50 gr IMR 4895 and 130 gr Nosler ballistic tip from a 22" ultra light Pac Nor barrel on a pre 64 M70 receiver in a Bordon Rimrock stock, with a Leupold 2x7 scope with Stoney Point elevation knob and 13" Harris swivel bipod. Loaded up with ammo, this weights 9 pounds.
This is 2875 fps = ~ 50 kpsi.
This is wimpy.
I don't know why you want to go even wimpier.
I need to be kind of wimpy to stay accurate in that light weight rifle.
If your rifle his heavier than my ultralight, you may want to go for 3,000 or 3,100 fps with 4350, a traditional loading.

But if you reallly DO WANT wimpy, 4895 down loads very well.

Thanks for re-assurance. I have not loaded with that powder in a while, since my favorite is 2700, so I wanted to make sure of it. ArchAngelCD, I found the Hodgdon info last night going thru some other threads on here. Great info and it even confirmed what you all are saying as well. I think I will play around with a few charges and see what he and the rifle likes the best.

Sounds like a plan since that's the only sure way to find out if that powder is for your rifle/caliber combo or not. ( but then again, 4895 seems to be the Unique of rifle powders so...)

IMR and Hodgdon 4895 are NOT the same powder. H4895 works for reduced loads, I don't know about the IMR version. H4895 is my 'unique' rifle powder - works well for everything I shoot. I have 2 G sons with 243s. After a day at the range, they were ready for full bore loads with 100 gr. Amaxs. Thanksgiving, the 13 yr old was ticked his group wasn't a cloverleaf.

I use I4198 in both 357 Herrett and 218 Bee for my Contender. And in the Herrett I drop the load to 60% and use cast bullets for cheap practice.
