Have a problem with LOP & girlfriend

Want the girlfriend to practice with the IMI Timberwolf .357 Mag pump for fun and home defense, and she's excited to do so, which is great. However, she's like 5' 3" and the LOP is too long on it for her....just not working.

Since they are no longer made, I'm of course not going to hack up the existing wood stock.

What I'd like to do, since it's a break-down gun anyway, is just get a 2nd replacement part stock, take the steel "interface" or "trunion" (if I'm using those terms correctly), remove the wood stock from the steel on this 2nd part, and then fabricate (or have someone else fabricate) a pistol grip & stock (single wood unit I think) with a shorter LOP, and re-attach to the "interface".

Assuming there are no extra stocks at Numrich etc., (guess I need to go check - but I'm not getting my hopes up for this obscure rifle), any ideas to brainstorm on how to go about fashioning a quality alternate stock like this, and still be able to restore to original config to keep the rifle's value? Any gunsmiths you could recommend that would do this job?

This may have gone better in gunsmithing; I dunno..... Thanks.

The other alternative (please chime in if you have opinion on this one), is to ditch the Timberwolf idea for her, and instead get her on the M1 Carbine, which has a short LOP. But I just thought that that pump with crossbolt safety would be safer and less complex for a beginner like her, than a semi-auto's manual of arms (what with magazines, detaching, attaching, charging, etc.)

P.S. Until she's more advanced, she's not overly comfortable with the recoil of handguns, shotguns, and rifle-round rifles; hence the handgun-cal carbine choices for her at this point in time.

Know any woodwork hobbyists? Use the existing buttstock as a pattern, and get a piece of 1x6 yellow pine. Allow for butt pad when measuring the length. Jig-saw, planer and belt sander. Router, if slotting is necessary. Maybe two hours. Drill bolt/screw holes as appropriate.

We will need photos and measurements, in order to give good advice about something like this.

It's kind of like an employment application for an administrative assistant, you know.:D

Oh yes...pictures of the user in question is definitely needed! lol hehehehe

Try to find a replacement butt stock and simply cut it down to her measurements, or as Art mentioned, have a complete butt stock fabricated from....whatever.

Do not, however, tell a woman that you will take her shooting just as soon as her butt is a couple inches smaller. Women don't care for that, for some reason.

In my experience most women seem to really like the M1 carbine.

Light, fast, short, and they don't have to find ammo for it.

That's classic, ArmedBear - I laughed my fool head off. :D OK, check it out - I will take pics of the stock in question and examine it in detail, post later, then go from there. By later, this could be days or weeks with all the crap going on right now.

P.S. Coincidentally, I'm greatly simplifying, so if you're interested, check the classifieds - by this weekend, I'm going to have 15 to 16 (more) guns for sale - mostly rifles. Couple handguns.

Hmmm, makes sense - she does seem to like me... [/weak humor attempt]

ONLY problem with that is it's a USGI, so I don't want to overuse it. But that's a minor issue - as little as she'll use it, it won't add any additional wear. Maybe I'll go that route until I fabricate the stock for her for the timberwolf.

It was made to be abused and I dought that she can break it. If she does there are so many spare parts out there that you could build a new one.

Better yet, buy one for her to show how much you love her.

It is doubtful that you can afford enough .30 carbine ammo to wear one out. Sure, you may wear some small parts, but they're replaceable. If you're concerned about keeping 100% USGI parts (not an unreasonable concern), just buy some USGI spares now and shoot the thing. But don't worry about keeping the "original" parts with the rifle...the original parts disappeared into the parts bin along with 1 million or so other parts during an arsenal reworking, sometime before Korea.

There's a LOT of "Sold Out"s there.

But interestingly enough, the following are NOT sold out:

-"Stock Adjusting Block"
-"Stock Adjusting Screw Nut"
-"Stock Base"

Whatever those are. Everything else relating to the stock is sold out. Yeah, I think that fashioning the stock I want out of wood is something I can do myself - fun little project - thanks Art. It's the interface to the rifle via the takedown screw that is the potential problem - dunno if one or more of these 3 parts in some combination covers it (since I don't see a schematic), OR whether I can dis-attach the wood from the existing steel parts and substitute my fabricated wood stock (I'd rather do the former - buy the additional steel parts and have a dedicated separate complete stock -- and rather not do the latter - mess with the existing entire stock piece, taking it apart).

I told her that if she comes to really like & enjoy shooting the Timberwolf, I'd give it to her. But yeah, I'd do the same thing with a Universal or Plainfield M1 (but not the USGI - hey man, we're not MARRIED!)

If you can find one, here's a shot of my Winchester Trapper Compact. It has a shorter stock, than normal.

Edited to add; distance from end of stock to trigger- 12.5"

overall length; 33"

the mini 14 has several stock options also if you check their website they list the lop for each stock. plus there are aftermarket options.

Not THAT complicated..

Tad,
If your girlfriend can drive to work, or cook a meal, she can handle the manual of arms of the M1 carbine. If the noise is a bit much[ and it sometimes is with new shooters ] how about a 10/22 for awhile? Its going to teach some basics her how to operate a semi auto rifle, and give her a chance to gain confidence while she learns marksmanship and practice safe firearms handling.

There's nothing wrong with that gun.

Get a new girlfriend.

Just kiddin', Dr. Tad!!! :D

Yeh, with the spare stock that Zundefolge found, get one and just cut the worst-looking one of the two off at the butt-pad end. The trim down the recoil pad and stick it back on. Hopefully, the removal of the whole wooden stock isn't too complicated - just a long screw or threaded rod accessed from undeneath the recoil pad.

I am a woodworker (and I even have a perfect-size piece of walnut scrap you could have) and I was dreading fashioning a stock from scratch. The part you can see is easy enough. The end that seats up inside the receiver is power-milled, precisely, on a multi-axis CNC machine. You do not want to craft that by hand unless you're really bored.

Also, Venerated Administrator's idea to "get a piece of 1x6 yellow pine" as starting blank is, uh, a bad one. No matter how much you stain it, etc. it will never look pleasing. Another -1 for hand-making a stock yourself....

+1...we have to know what we're workin' with. sofa.gif

Well...I don't believe the degauss will fix that monitor. nothing.gif
