My girlfriend apparently signed me up for the NRA...

What would be a good .22 rifle to return the favor? I'm thinkin' 10/22 but she likes really really lightweight guns since she's kinda scrawny haha. For example, she really liked my brothers mossberg 702 plinkster but I'd like to get her something nicer.

Are there any really nice aftermarket stocks for the 10/22 that I could get?

The Ruger 10/22 allweather (Stainless with lightweight black polymer stock) weighs almost nothing as-is right out of the box.

With all the customization options out there with aftermarket stocks and the carbon fiber barrels, you could make it even lighter if you so wished in the future. There's no limit to the stuff availible for the 10/22.

You'd have to channel out the stock a bit, but the Butler Creek carbon fiber barrel is often availible at many sporting good stores like Gander Mountain and Sportsman's warehouse. With that, and the Ruger stock it'd almost blow away in the wind.

Get a silver colored red-dot optic, a nice Harris ultralite bipod to support it, and a volquartzen match trigger pack, and she'd have the ultimate lightweight plinker. A large carton of .22 would weigh more.

Even when knowledgable gun people pick up my 10/22 allweather cased in a rifle bag etc., they often think the bag is empty at first.

There are loads of stocks for the 10/22, but I've never really researched them. Just do a search on Google. If she likes lightweight, a Remington Nylon 66 would fit the bill perfectly, but it would obviously have to be used. In new rifles, anything in a synthetic stock should be fairly lightweight, but I don't have any specifics, sorry.

If you want light, accurate & beautious...

...Check out a Browning BL-22. Don't mess with pictures, go to the gunstore and hold one...

CZ rifles have a great following! One of the best values for the cost.

I'd recommend a CZ 452 and there's a bunch of different styles. If she likes light ones, you could get a scout or if you want a normal size there's a bunch of varieties.

Check out this forum on rimfirecentral...

Also, consider a HM2 or a HMR .17 caliber. Both are nice rounds!

PLUS 1 for Browning BL-22. These are really nice lever action guns that fit a women to a T. I gave one to my wife for our anniversary, and she loves it. As it turned out she can really shoot it. :what:

A good used one is ~ 3-400$.

Also...these guys here are GREAT! I ordered my CZ through them and they are more than friendly...

just go to new rimfires and then click on CZ.

Also, here's the link to CZ, so you can see their styles

The basic and scout are both under $200, but they only come in .22LR. Take a look.

I ordered the 452 American and will be getting another soon enough.

I recommend the Ruger 10/22, it's the AK-47 of 22lr rifles. Alittle advice, stay away from Federal American Eagle 22lr ammo. The American Eagle 22lr ammo is extremely crappy. The slugs are just too rough for 100% reliability. If this ammo jams a Ruger 10/22, it will jam other 22lr rifles.

I see the howling, screaming hordes of 10/22 fanatics have already started to inundate the thread with their insistence that a 10/22 is the only way for anyone to go. In the face of such narrowmindedness I stand and say...

THIS IS JUST LIKE CHOOSING YOUR WIFE/GIRLFRIEND'S SIDEARM. LET HER CHOOSE HER OWN RIFLE BASED ON HER OWN LIKES AND DISLIKES.

That said, I really like the idea of getting her that Browning, but if the money's too high on it, Henry lever action .22's (standard model, not "Goldenboy") are nice too and she'll probably get a lot of enjoyment out of either. But those two are, obviously, not the only two choices out there either.

Oh screw it

What Barbara said :D

How am I supposed to follow a post like hers?

Oh I was going to be my typical Practical Southern Boy Self and suggest some stupid stuff like:

-Let her shoot a variety.
-Get a .22 to match as close can the platform she chooses for less expensive practice and fun.
Marlin 60 for M1 , Mini 14 and such
CZ 452 for say a Model 70 in '06
Marlin 39 for a Marlin 336 in 30-30

Yeah typical stuff a dumb male would suggest.

Like the lady said :

Get her an M1. I'm a chick. I like them. She probably wants one, too.

:D

A modern day Bonnie Parker:D That little woman has a bigger gun then mine:eek:

Let HER Choose the Ruger 10/22!!!

It's perfect, isn't it? Ruger just downsized a model of the 10/22 for small folks (I had my smith cut an extra stock down for my 10-year old before that happened). It's hard to go far wrong with a 10/22 for a first rifle. The trick is, you gotta make HER pick it... yeah, I know, there's other good picks, but the Ruger's popular for reasons I'm not going to repeat. I've bought um.... what... eight or nine of these, half of them gifts, and have been shooting them since about 1972. My wife, kids and ex all really like them. I'd take that lady to a gun show, have her try on different ones, and let her pick, but the gentle advice I'd give would be steering towards the Ruger. Worst case: she picks something out neither one of you likes, and you trade it for a better fit. Cheap date compared to all the alternatives. Trust me. Married twice, 31 years total - let her pick

Just a thought... but Browning's take down model is an instant classic. My mom swears by hers.

And who am I to argue with mom?

I dont think anybody has mention the marvelous Henry lever actions .22 rifles.....they can be had for around $200 and are short, light handy little rifles.

Pretty too.......(they also have a youth model if thats required, probably not)
