Have You Ever Bought A Gun Because you Can Reload...?

I purchased a Remington model 14 in 32 Remington for a very good deal because the lack of obtainable ammunition. Reworked and loaded 30-30 brass, I now have great shooter in a unique rifle.

I bought a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 mag. many years ago. I had never reloaded before. I really wanted to see what the .41 would do. I bought a Lee 3 hole turret press and the rest is history. I'm still reloading with that same press today and it's been rebuilt once by Lee. I have harvested several deer with that revolver and my handloads.

First time, a 7mmTCU barrel for my Contender.

Second time, a North American Arms revolver in .450 Maximum Express. The ammunition is an expensive collector item. Making brass involves shortening .454 Casull brass and turning down the rim diameter.

Quite a few years ago I ran across a deal too good to pass up on a used custom built 338/06. I'd been thinking about getting into reloading, but buying that rifle meant I had to. A few years later I found an even better deal on a 300 WSM, which I'd have never bought if I didn't hand load. I kept both for a while before figuring out the 300 WSM did everything better and with less recoil. I let the 338/06 go even though it was the reason for me getting into reloading.

I keep finding .308 brass at the range so I have a pile of it, and I have bullets/primers/powders, but I don't have a .308 rifle or dies yet. That's a dangerous situation to be in......

Well.....I do have a big pile of primed, and an even bigger pile of fired, .30-06 sitting in my shop-but no .30-06 in my safe. Yet. ;)

Early in my gun collecting/reloading career, once I had scrounged enough brass in a particular caliber for which I owned no gun, I would absolutely begin hunting for a gun in that caliber, especially if said gun could fire more than one caliber either directly or via barrel swap.

I had a bucked of .40 S&W brass, and bought a set of .40 dies (from a going out of business sale at a local gun store) before I had a .40 S&W gun. Once I had that gun (SIG P229), I quickly sourced a .357 Sig barrel, and started down that road as well. Also, since I already had some .40 165 grain bullets in my inventory, I also bought a 10mm hand gun.

It's really a slippery slope once you get it real bad like I've got it.

No.308?

No .30-06?

What are you guys, communists? :)
LOL

For me, 25 WSSM. Now, though, I have to get some dies to resize WSM to WSSM, and all the neck cutting & trimming to go with it, because of brass being essentially like unicorns or other mythical beasts.

No rifles in 7.62x51, 54 or 30-06, but I do have 7.62x39mm and .223. My eyes don't SEE far enough to use bigger calibers. :D
Yes, I did buy one rifle in a specific caliber because I already loaded that caliber - my CZ 527M/CSR, because I was already reloading that caliber for my vz-58 rifle. Discovered that the little CZ carine runs like a top, and never looked back. :)
