Honestly, the cheaper and more basic a gun is, the less inclined I am to mess with it. I never did anything to either of my Glocks other than a grip sleeve or sights. Of course, both are long gone. LCPs, nothing but ammo. But both of them are gone too.

Similarly, I don't spend a lot of time or money modifying my ball-pein hammer or toilet plunger. And the girls I dated, I would buy dinner, or maybe a dress...

I have not done anything to my GP100, I love that revolver. Every other handgun I have owned or own I either wanted to do something or did something. The only other exception might be my CZ75BD Police, all I want to do is take off the serrations on the trigger.

Sig P7 - grip, sights and trigger are fabulous. The squeeze cocker design is unusual but the gun works flawlessly.

I'm with your line of thinking bergmen, the S&W 15-4 stays unmolested! There aren't many that should stay that way, but to me, this is at the top of the list.

Now, I can't say I've never had one tweaked a bit. My Ruger SP 101 had a horrid trigger on it when I bought it, it went to a smith friend of mine, had an action job done on it, trigger and hammer smoothed up, a touch lighter spring or two, the inside of the frame had the roughness removed, now, this dude has an action where the DA is smoother than oil on water.

I kind of consider my CZ PCR as being 'unmessed with'.
I did change the sights, but at the time they didn't offer any options for night sights. I think the originals might have had some of that paint that glows after exposure to light. Read: useless.
If they had even offered tritium sights on it, it would be bone stock.

Almost all of my guns can't really be customized. I changed the grips on my S&W Model 10, but no internal work. I just use my desire for a longer slide release, larger grip, and such as an excuse to buy a new gun.

All my J frame S&Ws get synthetic grips, I can't shoot them well with the stock wooden ones. Other than that, I don't have a blanket policy on guns; some get a tweaking like grips or sights, most don't.

I'd say I've only messed with 1/3 of my handguns, and that was only for grip swaps or replacing worn springs. The only exception is the trigger jobs I had done on my 1911 and CZ-75. Both had horrid trigger pulls from the factory.

Two, actually:

Springfield Armory 1911A1 Loaded (5-inch barrel, all-steel)

Kimber Ultra CDP II (3-inch barrel, aluminum frame, steel slide)


To be fair, they have been messed with, but the manufacturers did that. Both have had similar, factory "modifications" (all Springfield Loadeds and all Ultra CDPs come this way). Off the top of my head, they are:

1. Throated, match-grade barrel
2. Polished feed ramp
3. Lowered/flared ejection port
4. Adjustable trigger
5. Night sights
6. Ambidextrous safety
7. Beveled mag well

Both pistols are extremely accurate and feed both ball and hollowpoint ammunition reliably after a few-hundred-round break-in period (the small Kimbers need their recoil springs replaced every 500 rounds - just did mine, they're inexpensive and from Kimber).

Here's what they look like...

The bigger Springfield is parkerized and wears cocobolo African hardwood grips. The Kimber's aluminum frame is coated in a matte black "KimPro II" (epoxy?) finish; the stainless slide has a satin silver finish and rosewood grips.

These two of mine are staying stock and I am not changing a thing for they work GREAT ! They are a Glock 17 from 1991 and a S&W M&P40 made this year. Both have worked hard and definitely not safe queens.

They ALL require something; better finish, better sights, action work, de-horning...something.
Even Glocks need new steel sights.

Pretty much all of my other handguns have mods, some are heavily modified. I have one that has cost me more cash in custom work than I paid for the gun that I bought NIB.


Come to think of it ALL of my semi autos have been modified in some way, save the Buck Mark. But 3 of my 5 revolvers are still untouched.

EAA Witness Elite Match - the finest single action trigger and most accurate factory gun I've ever shot, everything about this pistol is just right for a target pistol.



S&W 1911 SC - the trigger is just about right for a carry gun, I love the night sights ,and the overall look of the pistol is very nice.



S&W 642-2 Enhanced action - this has the performance center action on it and is as smooth as you can ever expect for a double action revolver.

The M103 came from the factory perfect.
The other 2 are my carry guns. As SD weapons, they work just fine the way they are.

I think you're describing the Nonesuch. There ain't no such critter. Factory guns are good starter kits, but that's about it.

Even if I had a pistol built completely to my specs, I'd probably still want to fine tune some aspect or other.

Let's see. Added night sights to the Glock. Put some repro grips on the 1917, as it had Magnas on it. Put those Magnas on the 28-2, it had a Hogue Mono Grip. Might think about getting wood grips and a T-Grip adapter for my 642. Prolly eventually put a short trigger on my 1911. Refinished all three grips on my cowboy pistols last week.

Don't feel the need to whizzbang up my Ruger .22s. My 637 will most likely stay stock, unless my wife wants to change something about it, as she has commandeered it. Don't mess with my rifles much, but that's another forum.
