I've shot in many "Fall Turkey Shoots" over the years and have been somewhat successful. Our old club in Waterville/Sidney, Maine held them for about 10 years, but none for many years now. The last one is probably my fault. I made a comment about some people's rifles not being competitive and an argument ensued. Some of those old beaters and sighting systems would often miss the 100 yard target completely at that distance. One shot for a dollar, and there was room for about 10 shooters per round. We shot rounds for offhand or "prone with rest" over a log.
People didn't believe me that the rifle means as much or more as skill of the shooter, so I challenged them. I said that I could show my wife how to shoot my .22-250 next Sunday and she'll clean your clocks, shooting prone. "Never happen! It's the shooter, not the rifle." they said.
The next Sunday morning, I instructed my pregnant wife how to shoot my Rem 700, .22-250 and after 4 shots, she got good enough to hit the 10 ring. So we went to a family party and showed up for the last two targets of the day. The results are as follows:
