Early shooting skills?

Were the police receptive to your offer? I suppose it depends on the size of the town and the force, and the qualifications of the guy offering . I've thought about this but our police force has their own firearms instructors and probably wouldn't care to open it up to "old" retirees.

Most do. There are less than a dozen Sheriff deputies in our county, but they still have a "qualified training officer" at their qualification outings at our local gun club. Deputies are encouraged to do as much practice as they can get in, and all but one is still military reserve. Don't know for sure, but there may be some liability issues involved with a civilian doing any firearms training.

The only rifles I was allowed to shoot willy nilly was my Crosman air rifle. When it came to a .22 or the .410 SS it was expected that there was to be a rabbit or squirrel for each expended round. So, I did not miss and what that really means is, then and now, I pass any shot I am not sure of. Oh, there was an old timer down the bayou, lived in a floating house (shack) and he was rather unique. It was unknown as to his actual age, he could have been in his nineties or even hundreds, who knows! I would venture down there in my pirogue and trade a squirrel for a catfish or something. And he taught me the fine art of "shooting at" something rather than "shooting" something as it was customary for him to "shoot at" yankees and his determination of what constituted a yankee was rather colorful. The law got called out on him regularly but that was mostly for his other shenanigans like running a still and borrowing other folks yo-yos and trot lines, not so much shooting at yankees and actually there where not that many to shoot at. To my knowledge he never accidentally shot anything he was "shooting at" so I would say he was the best shot I ever seen because in truth, he never missed, unless, according to him, he was just giving it (them, whatever) a scare. At least according to him.
