During this ammo crunch, have you helped out a neighbor or friend by supplying some ammo or components? I have sold some reloaded 9mm and .40 to friends and neighbors, and some leftover .40 bullets and brass to another friend's son. I am getting a guarded feeling about giving up too much more until something loosens up a bit, as I do not know what to charge with regards to what it will cost me to replace items. Anyone else become the "go-to" guy for ammo? I would imagine some of us would rather NOT be known at the guy who reloads, or has a supply of ammo, as this drags on.

Not sure if it was willingly...my buddy shot up about 500rds of my 223s last range trip!

Haven't had any requests for ammo from any of my friends. I think we're all just waiting this dry spell out and cutting way back on our visits to the range.

I'd keep that under your hat, the selling reloads thing. There's an attorney who posts on here (IIRC, might be another board) who insists that selling reloads is a violation of federal law if not done by an FFL-holder.

I think it's a semantics/semiotics issue myself, insofar as "substantial" is a fungible term of art used by the BATFE in re: application of income from the sale.

YMMV.

But yes, I've also helped friends out in our country's time of need. Be proud.

I haven't had much call. Most of the people I know stocked up after the last drought and have as much/more than I do. The exception is that I gave some super colibri and some primers to an acquaintance. Not much, but some. In that case he had .22lr but it was all HV and he had a noise issue, and he had never reloaded before and wanted to try so I gave him a few things including primers he would need.

yes.

friend had his son buy him an AR unexpectedly and remarked he couldn't find any ammo to try it out so I sent him some.

edit: he didn't ask for any, I figured it'd be nice to spend some time with his son before he was redeployed.

I've given a few friends some ammo to help them out but never reloads. I'm the only one that shoots my reloads.

Call me paranoid, but if something happens with the ammo I give someone and it's from a factory, that's one thing. If I loaded it myself and give it to them and something happens (personal injury) I'd imagine losing a friend may be the least of my worries.....:(

Plus, as others have stated, I understand that there are legal consequences to selling your reloads without the proper licensing.

Yea, don't sell reloads. I give my friend/neighbor the occasional batch of .380 using his brass.. that's about it.

I have. I frequently go out of town, and have a friend that I know I can trust to come feed my dogs when I'm away. He doesn't mind because he only lives four miles away, but on the next trip, I will be leaving him 60 rounds of Federal XM193F in the dog food barrel as a "thank you" gift. He comes without fail, and asks nothing for his troubles. He bought an AR before the panic, but did not have much ammo. I have enough that I will help him out with it.

I've given away some to friends who cannot get any ammo. I've only given away factory stuff though. I don't want to be responsible to anyone else for my reloads.

Some of them have asked if they could pay me for the ammo. Rather than establish a price which may be offensive, I tell them to keep looking at the stores and just replace what they shoot up. That way they can be mad at the gun shops and not me when they pay an excessive price for the ammo.

and even if they never replace the ammo, I gave it to them so I do not expect to get anything in return.

I'll generally have sharpening stones in my truck though. At dinner parties, Thanksgivings etc., it's surprising what sucky state folk's knives are in and they don't have a clue.

I have used my stock to teach two new shooters how to handle the gun they bought but couldn't find ammo

I've split a case with someone who normally wouldn't stock up on ammo before.
After I demonstrated why I keep a supply on hand - now he knows that when this silliness ends he should start stocking up.

I have given away a few boxes of 9x19 and a couple bricks of .22LR over the past few months.
I have not sold any ammo to anyone. I'll give it to help out, but I don't sell it.
My prissy neighbors do not need to know that I own guns.
.

Yes.
The receptionist husband was going for his Texas CHL shooting test and could not find 9mm ammo anywhere so I sold them two boxes of S&B for the same price as I bought for a couple of years before which by the way was under $12 a box.
Gave away a box of 12 gauge #6 and a five pack box of #4 Buck to an Iraqi vet who recently started working here and was having a time locating it.
And I also found and purchased two 100 round value packs of 40 caliber for my girl friends Pastor as he could not find any.
Of course he paid me back right away upon receiving it.
I have plenty and will help a friend because that's what friends do.

I've given away around 1000 9mm rounds I loaded several years ago. Only have one 9mm handgun left, inherited from my dad. Gave the my other one to my youngest son years ago. Still have a bunch of components but don't shoot the 9 much anymore.

Just did. I have a friend ( a lady) who I helped decide on a CCW which she purchased. No ammo to be found. I supplied her with some.

Yes.

I have a couple home ranges where friends shoot and I teach new shooters, usually friends of friends).

For years I've given a lot of ammo to new shooters and friends shooting on my range.

Since the ammo shortage I've given away over 5,000 rounds of 12 ga, 38 Special, 9mm, 32 ACP, 380, 22LR, etc, to new and old shooting friends.

Last week a lady friend bought a new AR. I gave her a Red Dot sight and mount and 200+ rounds of .223 to get her started.

I figure, if you can't take care of your friends when they need it, what good are you.

Two weeks ago I was in the LGS when a older couple bought a SIG P238. The store had no ammo and we couldn't tell them where they could get any.
I told them, if they would wait 5 minutes I'd go home and get a box of .380 ammo. When they wanted to pay me I told them it was the best price in town, Free.:)

Yes I have. A co-worked bought a Sig P226 Mk25. I sold him 50 rounds of 9mm (half of which were 147gr Hydrashoks the other 115gr FMJs) for $30 I think. I think that counts as "taking care" of a friend. I went with him to pick up the Sig and he came over to my place after work and we gave it a good cleaning. I couldn't let him leave without some ammo for the thing! This was a couple, three months ago when the ammo (and even gun) situation was still dire. Guns are back with a vengance. Ammo much less so but improving I guess.

I helped out a few people who were buying their first guns and couldn't even get a box to try it out. That's about it.
