I grew up on Oahu so I remember how restrictive anything relating to guns is. I may be moving back there in a few months and am worried that my WASR won't be legal. Some of my guns were registered there before but most aren't so I'm already dreading the trip down to the main HPD station to get the State's blessing to exercise my federally guarnateed rights.

Any High Roaders there to give me a heads up?

buy all the guns you can before you go so you don't have to deal with their broken "permit to acquire" system.

a friend of mine there couldn't get one because he has an arrest on his record, even though it wasn't him (probably some other guy with the same name). He even checked it out in courthouse records, and it comes up clean, but the HPD won't budge. He needs a lawyer for this, but doesn't have the money.

Its a damn shame when you need to get a lawyer just to exercise your basic human right to own a gun.

The only thing that might bite you is their 10-round magazine limit. Oh yea, they give you 3 days after you and/or your guns arrive to get them registered. No NFA items allowed, which is why I didn't stay there after getting out of the military.

I just left out of there back in August. It wasn't too awful bad as I am originally from SC. The 10-round magazine ban was raised up to 15 rounds back in July. Permits are a pain in that they take about 14 days to get. Long gun permits are good for a year and pistol permits are only good for a single use and you have to get them after you purchase the pistol but are needed prior to pickup. If you are military, there is the Schofield Rod and Gun Club. They let you shoot full clips and rapid fire, but there is no sunshade. The public range at Koko Head in free, but you are only allowed 5 rounds in a clip at a time and no rapid fire. If you are looking for cheap FFL transfers, check out Al Mongeon or his business, Ready on the Right over in Kailua. He charges $26.25 versus $75 at Young Guns or $100/10% of the value at Magnum Firearms. Assault pistols are banned, but you can have rifle clips that are over 15 rounds provided there are no pistol versions. This means AR-15, AK-47, M-1 Carbin, MP5/HK94, Ruger 10/22 and Thompson 1927;s.

As noted previously, you have 3 days to register any firearms you bring to Hawaii. For registration you still have to fill out the application, have your firearm inspected, and sign a release for your doctor to disclose any mental problems you may have. I suppose if you fail the background check for any reason, they will be looking to collect your weapons.

I had to do the fingerprint routine the first time. If you are still in the system it may not be so difficult. HPD makes the process as time consuming as possible if you are buying locally.

I believe the prohibition on any magazine with a capacity over 10 rounds that will fit any handgun is still applicable. I think the 15 round amendment was under consideration and had passed second reading in April last year (at the time of Virginia Tech) and then quietly disappeared. Please verify before you bring any high capacity magazines.

Concealed carry permit is "may issue", and NO ONE gets a permit.
