The TDA S&W autos (4506, 4516) are fairly heavy. The DA trigger reach may be a bit long for a small hand, but the hammer could be cocked for the first shot. They are good shooters.

For smallish hands, and not a 1911, the ergonomics of the HK45 are hard to beat. If even that's too big, the HK45c or USP45c are also good candidates.

While the grip length of the HK45c or USP45c may be a disadvantage to a person with a large hand, they are not an advantage to the folks with small hands since the trigger reach isn't any shorter than their full size counterparts.

I've got a bunch of 45s. I like them all! But for HD, in my safe i keep a para double stack 14.45 loaded, if i have to grab something for HD. it's big, heavy, & has a lot of capacity.. 14+1. I have autos, revolvers, glock, xd, ati, & regular 1911s, & they each have their strong points, but for HD, the para is the one i'd grab.

For accuracy & fun range shooting, the revolvers are the best. More accurate than the autos (in my fumbling hands), & you don't have to pick up the brass. I can reload swc, or just about anything in them, while the autos can grumble about anything but ball.

For CC, i either have the glock 30s, which is very small, lightweight & snappy, or the ATI fatboyLW, which is heavier but about the same size. They are 10+1 & 12+1 respectively. For 'do anything' 45s, either of those would be good choices, but the glock is probably more reliable.

A revolver wouldn't be a bad choice in HD, either. 6 rounds of HD ammo with some moonclips for backup & you would have a capable defense weapon. No issues with feeding, no jams, goes bang every time. Get the new ruger redhawk, & you can shoot hot 45 colt loads through it, too.

Good luck with your choice.. you can always change your mind & go another direction.

Look at the Para P12. It's not as big as the P14, is heavy, and stone reliable. If you can handle one, the FNX-45, or the FNP-45 are also stone reliable, full-sized guns. I own the P14, P12, and FNP-45.
