Inspired by the Box of Truth, I went out shooting yesterday and tested some ammo. I used #7 bird shot and 00 Buck. I set up a couple of telephone books against some stakes and walked back ten paces.

The 00 Buck blew right through the telephone books. The #7 shot went about half way through. In boths cases, the wads took out a big chunk of the telephone books. This was from an 12 guage, 18.5 inch cylinder bore barrel.

After my test, I would use the bird shot. It should be lethal at home defense ranges, but not as dangerous to the neighbors. I would go bird shot all the way.

I keep 4 000 2 3/4" buck and one last loaded first up Brenneke Original slug in 7 shot 870's and 1100's. 2 #6 bird shot and 3 more Brenneke's slugs in side saddles (different color for bird shot!).Just what has worked for me! In 20 guage guns I like same 3 #2 or #3 buck shot and one Winchestern super slug in their 5 round tube.With 3 #8 bird shot and 2 slugs on butt cuff. The Idea is to load the bird shot for pests that need such as you have room in the tube! You still have the heavy hitters remaining and are not putting max strain on mag spring.

Given that I may only get one shot at the person, I opted for one with a powerful load and payload up front.

The next 3 rounds are Federal 00 buck (reduced recoil).
The last rounds are Breneke slugs.

8 shot magazine.... 5 rds #1 buck with 3 rds of slugs. No side saddle, I figure if that doesnt stop the onslaught before I can load another 8 rd mag then Im probably a goner.
