I'm looking for suggestions for a HD/CCW handgun. My budget is about $400 possibly a bit more. Something that is fairly comfortable to shoot (no super light 357's..lol) New, used auto or wheelgun doesnt matter. I've been looking at these 3rd gen Smith police trade ins lately but I dont know what kind of shape they are in.
Thanks in advance
Rob

For the use you have outlined, I think I'd look long and hard at a good used Smith & Wesson Model 10 K frame in .38 Sp. or a Model 13 in .357. They are tough, simple, fixed sight medium frame service guns and can also be had in stainless (model 64 and 65). Most commonly found barrel lengths are four inch followed by three inch and two inch. If you find a two inch model 64 at any price, sell anything but your soul and snap it up.

Since they are not viewed as especially cool or sexy by the uninitiated, these revolvers can often be found used and in great shape at the price range you are looking at or less. Because so many were made (still are) there are lots of accessories available for these guns. Speed loaders and a good holster followed by lots of practice and you will be well armed.

+1 what DarkSoldier said....considering the 3rd gen S&W autos, I'd look at the 9mm versions first and the .45acp versions second as these would have been stressed the least in firing - given equal firing time as the .40 - in other words, the .40s would have been stressed the most out of these three calibers....and if .40 was all that was available in the used S&Ws, then I'd look at another brand...used Glocks are great, I prefer the 9mm in these as well and if anything is needed or wanted, you can do it yourself, they're simple and durable - like a good model 64 S&W .38 special revolver only it holds more ammo! :D

Yep, you can't hardly go wrong with a good 'ol model 10,13,15,19,64,65,or 66 S&W revolver, that is, as long as the magnum versions haven't been fed an extreme amount of magnum ammo and stretched the frames out...buying used in the .38 special only line (10, 15, 64) is always a safer bet as to getting a good used S&W revolver ...;)

The GP100 line of Ruger revolvers are excellent values as well as their P series autos...you can usually buy these new for what a used Smith or Glock will cost...(I just prefer the triggers on Smiths and Glocks)...:p

Let us know what you decide....

I called a local gunshop today, they have quite a few Police trade in 3rd gen S&W's. They have a 6946 I'm gonna check out tomorrow. Not much in the way of revolvers but lots of autos. Thanks for the tips guys.

Go with a Kahr CW9. Mine was $385 NIB before tax. They are good option for a concealed carry firearm. They are lighter, thinner, and shorter in length than the G26 and XD9 SC. Its height is shorter than the XD9 SC but not the g26. They are single stack, 7+1 or 8+1 cap, weigh 15.8oz and are .9" wide. They have a very smooth trigger and are suprisingly accurate for a 3.5" barrel.

I ended up putting some money on the S&W 6946 today. It was only $260. Its a police trade in, internals lookedreally good and it has night sights.
