I have been eyeballing the Walther p1/p38's recently. A true WWII p38 is probably out of the question budget wise, but there seems to be some really decent postwar p1's in arsenal refurb condition floating around that are not all that expensive. Im kind of getting interested in all this milsurp stuff and wondering if one of these would be worth the effort or not. I already have a Taurus Millenium Pro in 9mm so I like the commonality of the ammo. This is more of just having a range play toy that could double as Home Defense gun if needbe. I plan to carry the Taurus once I get the TX CHL out of the way.

Other than the Walther, I am also interested in a wheelgun of some sorts. Actually was interested in a 9mm snub nose, but seeing that its slim pickings on a 9mm revolver, Im not too sure I want to go this route. Again, commonality with ammo was the inital reason, not sure about those silly moonclips though. Im debating the more traditional route and going .357mag and shooting .38 special out of it for the range and keeping the cylinders stocked with .357 for HD and or CCW once I get around to it. Looking for a small snub sized pocket model of some sort, because my current Taurus has been good to me with the Millenium I have been looking at the various small framed Taurus revolvers, but S/W and Ruger have a few that have my eye too.

So if it were you, would you consider a Milsurp Walther P1/P38 or a wheelgun of some sorts for a second handgun.

If the wheelgun route, 9mm or the .357/38 spl route.

Not that I need another one, but theres always a chance the Pistol might be broken or Im in the middle of cleaning it and something goes south. I would feel better with some sort of a backup if nessecary. A big part of me is leaning the wheelgun route because I dont have one yet, but those Walther p1's sure have my attention. I dunno why but Milsurp stuff just seems to be calling my attention lately. I guess because they are proven designs and I appreciate the history behind them.

Thanks for the advice.

The Milsurp guns won't be around for very long. The others you mention are in current poduction. If you really like the Walther, and don't get it, you'll be kicking yourself in a year or two when they are gone.

I concur with Wally. If you have an interest in the Walther then get one before the sources dry up. There are plenty still in my area, although I have no real interest in them. I have read that there are differences in some of the models and things to look out for, but I don't have details. There is probably a Walther board somewhere that could help you pick one.

I would think that you have plenty of time to check things out before making a decision, but I would not worry about getting a wheel gun until you find your P1. poppy
