Im new to this board, but have been an active shooter and gun owner for many years - and Im just now starting to re-evaluate my approach CCW and am looking for opinions or advice.

I have had a CCW for roughly 12 years from the different states Ive lived or worked in, but other than some early enthusiam for carrying a .40 Glock 23, but I was never overly pleased with my IWB holster set up so I found myself carrying infrequently at best. The fact that the compact, lightweight-ish G23 had fairly snappy recoil with full strength .40 loads didn't make it much fun to shoot either - so my range time was usually spent with my Sig 9mm or my full sized 1911 .45, because they were easier and more fun to shoot well. But they weren't great concealed carry guns for an office paper pusher guy like me.

Then for a few years I worked in a state office building with metal detectors that did not permit me to carry on a daily basis, so my CCW pistol mostly sat in the truck most of the day. That lead to what can best be described as some pretty lazy CCW habits of just not carrying but maybe a dozen or so times a year, but mostly leaving in the truck.

Since then, Ive just gotten out of the habit of carrying on a regular basis. When I left my job with the state to work for a private company in an office job, I had a temporary rush of CCW enthusiasm and bought and tried the Kel-tec P3AT .380 on a recomendation from a friend. I tried everything with that little pistol, sent it back to Keltec twice, tried every kind of .380 ammo I could find but could never get it to shoot as reliable as Id like. I have no beef with Keltec, as far as I know it could be operator error as two friends of mine have Keltec .32s that they swear run like clockwork. But although the size was outstanding, that particular pistol and I never saw eye to eye. Now it sits in a safe.

But I never got back into the habit of daily CCW carry, in large part because alot of my current office job involves trotting over to the state building I used to work at to handle business there. Which means metal detectors and no carry. So the old habit of not carrying regularly continued.

Then a guy at work, an older manager type, but also an avid shooter who knew I was as well, quietly suggested I look into the trusty J frame S&W. So pumped up by the sky-is-falling feeling around election time in the Fall of 2008, I ran out and bought a Smith & Wesson airweight 642 in .38 special. Although its not much fun to shoot with .38 +P self-defense rounds, with standard .38 loadings I found myself rather enjoying it for practice (but still carry the .38+p for carry).

I actually love my J frame S&W. It rides great in a Nemesis front pocket holster, hardly prints at all, mostly doesnt look different from keys or a cellphone or such. And with a set of Crimson Trace laser grips it makes indoor shooting much easier. Its actually a great, almost ideal CCW solution to the majority of situations and cirumstances that I might reasonably, or even unreasonably, encounter. The J frame airweight .38 seemed to be "THE PERFECT CCW/ANSWER' I was looking for.... except it didn't have more than 5 rounds.

I knew that going in to buying a J frame, so its not like thats a suprise, but I still wanted more than just 5 rounds.

Im currently pondering a Glock 19 9mm, 15 rds instead of 5 sounds good to me, although not sure about 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen.

Maybe its the pending elections that have me riled up about my sudden surge of interest in getting another CCW, hard to say. Not wanting to get into politics really, just a wild guess about why Im suddenly so interested in my CCW again. Maybe Ive just been seeing seedier looking dude hanging out in the parking garage after work, particularly after working late, I dunno.

So thats where I am. Trying to think of a new CCW pistol purchase to jump start my interest. Any suggestions on pistols? G19? CW9? PM9? Something else cool Ive never heard of?

I have two S&W J frames but swithced to a Kimber Solo CDP for cc carry. The Solo is smaller, thinner, 9m with 6+1 shots, has a laser and night sights, I don't want to print in an office enviorment. The Solo for me is easier to conceal.

When I read the second paragraph I was thinking of suggesting the G19, since you liked the size of the G23 but not the recoil of the .40. I'd say it's a good think to look at, but there are a lot of options for 9mm pistols that are around the same size or smaller. You could even go G26 or S&W M&P9c, and get 10 or 12 rounds in a much smaller package.

You mentioned not liking IWB - did you have a proper belt and a good holster? A reinforced belt and a nice holster can make a world of difference. If you're an office man, you might want to look at the Crossbreed Supertuck. You can actually tuck your shirt in over the pistol and people won't even notice the metal clips on your belt.

I've done some of the same thinking... I guess for me the big question comes down to threat level vs consequences of being caught with a firearm in the office - i.e. lose your job and benefits. Some companies have HR policies about that.

Seems like you've made your choice on that front.

So, I'm assuming you are working in an office environment, ie. suit or business casual with people who don't know anything about guns, so if someone gets a glimpse of what you are carrying, you will have issues.

Also, assuming that you've determined that a 38, 9mm or 40 is adequate to the threat level you are considering being prepared for.

If that is the case, then why not go with a sub compact Glock 26 or 27 or something similar? This sized firearm is smaller than the Glock 19 or 23 sized firearms and easier to conceal, reducing the chances of printing yet fires a major caliber.

All the best with your choice...

Office carry

Front pocket carry is great with Kimb Solo/RugerLC9 size but access from office chair requires obvious movements or standing up. Same problem with driving. Both scenarios are covered by a good ankle holster but then the opposite problem occurs - you must bend or kneel to access the weapon. I'd encourage you, as Skribs has, to research further into behind the hip I/s or o/s WB carry. It is the only system that I've found to cover all scenarios best.
Roger LC9 looks like the Keltec but it's much more pistol IMHO.

when i think "office carry" i immediatly want to suggest pocket carry being as it is the most concealabe and easy to remove (if needed) system that i can think of. yes, drawing while sitting can be troublesome but not impossible. if you dont want to go with pocket carry, i would suggest the crossbreed supertuck. a single stack like a kahr pm9, p9, or cw9 would all be good choices.

People suggesting single stack sub-compacts, one of his issues with the J-frame was only 5 shots. I understand that 6 or 7 is more than 5, but it's a far cry from the 15 he wants in a G19.

Along with whatever gun you choose, no matter what you believe others to think and do regarding guns: TELL NO ONE THAT YOU ARE ARMED, TELL NO ONE YOU CARRY A GUN, OR EVEN OCCASIONALLY CARRY A GUN. EVER. Negative consequences always seem to turn up in office environments. There is no reason to tell anyone. The element of surprise is yours alone if you ever need to use it. Company policy and how those in power may treat you are always two different things, too. Trust no one; tell no one. I hope I am clear on that. Or contact me. Maybe I can say it a better way.:)

Yes, but they also reload relatively quickly compared to revolvers (in average hands. yes I've seen the Miculek videos). And carrying an extra mag of 6 rounds means your total is 12 rounds, compared to 10 with a J frame, and the faster reloads.

I carry an LCP in my pocket. It's really an incredible CCW gun. I could not possibly be happier with it. I tried the S&W 642, but sold it because the LCP already was smaller, thinner, lighter, printed less, higher capacity, and faster reloads. The only thing the 642 had going for it was that I thought the little revolver was "cooler" and that it uses a more powerful round.
Those weren't enough to warrant keeping it around. I even shoot the LCP more accurately than the J frame.

Thunderwear! Seriously, it's working great for the LCR. But I did have to ditch the sticky Hogue grips. Null Seventrees also work great.

I'm a big fan of very deep office concealment. Day in day out, someone can brush against your pocket or notice a printing on a hot day with the wrong fabric in the wrong light.

I am assuming that where you work, concealed carry is not a firing offense

Wearing suit and tie or even the khaki Friday casual attire, you might want to look at the Rohrbaugh

Personally, I think sticking with the snubby would be a reasonable choice and look into some different carry options. Belly band, should holster or shirt, etc. then get a car gun if you want extra protection while on your way to work, ec.

However some of the small 9mm pistols could work. Lc9, pf9, bp9cc, etc. but, I wouldnt switch just because of round count. 5 is probably going to be enough in an office environment.

There is nothing wrong with your J frame.

If you work in an office, give the Kangaroo Carry a chance: http://kangaroocarry.com/

This will give you deep concealment and you will still be able to reach it by going through the buttons of your shirt.

Odd.
I've got a Kangaroo but never use it. Worry about the straps printing through my shirt.

Thunderwear would be my suggestion, with a Kahr. Probably the new .45 if I had my choice.

Or just get another J frame, and carry it.10 rounds, using New York reload.

Discrete carry in office envrionment, shirt tucked in

I read the replies, but I'm going to answer based on the title of thread.
-Pocket carry: LCP 380, P3AT 380, or your Jframe (I prefer the lighter weight & extra capacity of the 380)
-Smartcarry: with pleated pants a subcompact Glock 26/27/33 plus an extra magazine is possible, Kahr PM9 or CM9 for sure.
