First of all, you shouldn't be clearing your house. Let the police do that with 2 or more people, plus they're trained for it.

Yeah, and just hope that it really is a burglar for the 30-45 minutes that a response can take out here, and not a dog, coyote, raccoon, or opossum going after the chickens.

Guess I should also hope that the sheriff doesn't get tired of me tying up his deputies for over an hour several times a week so they can come twell me what the noise was.

Let's just say that I would much rather be faced by a black, tacti-cool SA 6-gun with a light taped on it, used by someone who has no idea what they're doing, rather than whomever would have the guts to use that HK USP that is yellow with pink flowers on it and knows what they're doing.

I think it's a moot point.

HD? You have the advantage of knowing all the creeks, curves & nuances of your house. I know I can navigate my house in the dark w/ my eyes closed. I can also tell if things aren't right in the house I have so many advantages on my home field, that I doubt a light colored gun would make a difference one way or the other...
Now, I have been using a 2-tone Glock for house duty...at least to get me from bed to 12 ga :) and my all black 12 ga pump if pretty stealthy :D

You need an option in your poll that says: It doesn't make any difference.

I was issued two stainless steel weapons for duty use. The first was a Model 65 S&W and the second was a S&W 5906 auto. I worked mostly night shifts and never felt the light colored weapons were any disadvantage. The satin stainless finish didn't reflect light nearly as much as a polished blue surface did.

My experience was that it wasn't an issue at all.

Hey sorry guys, I forgot to put a "It dosen't matter" option.

I actually have thought about this before, and it's a good point--for CCW. For CCW, I do believe that a shinier or lighter gun could be a disadvantage in terms of stealth. That's why so far I won't CCW a stainless gun. I prefer matte black. My wife likes the look of stainless, so she'd probably prefer that. But I'm more concerned with the maximum capacity for stealth should I ever need it.

But, that said.... for HD I think it's irrelevant. If a BG breaks into your home, he probably knows you're there, anyway. I would call the cops and grab whatever gun I had near me. I don't care if it had pearl grips and pink flowers on it (though I'd never buy a gun like that). I'd tell the guy I called the cops and if he doesn't leave I'm going to shoot him. If he came near my loved ones or myself, I'd shoot him. In reality, he doesn't deserve a warning, but in court it looks better (though it's ridiculous that we have to think about these legal things with self defense!!).

It's hard to think of a circumstance where I'd be sneaking around my house trying to sneak up on an intruder. If I happened to not noticed a 2nd or 3rd intruder, that could be dangerous and could get me killed, which would leave my wife a widow and any kids I have would be w/o a dad. Why stick your neck out further than you have to? You're better off calling the cops ASAP and going to the safest point in your house with your loved ones (armed, of course, in case the SHTF) until the cops come. You have better odds with more backup (armed cops). Plus, telling the BG you called the cops and are armed will likely get him out of your house. If I were the BG, I sure as heck wouldn't hang around to find out if the homeowner was telling the truth.

But, all that said, I do agree that it's good to have a few matte black guns in case you're ever in a situation where stealth is of vital importance. HD just doesn't seem to be one of them, IMO.

I honestly believe that the only reason that I did not have to shoot someone on two different occasions is that they immediately saw my pistol in the glare of the streetlight. The INSTANT that I cleared leather and started to get on target they broke contact and ran. In both cases it was a stainless S&W snubby and it was very visible in those lighting conditions. They might have done the same thing if I had pulled a blue/black gun, I don't know. I do know that people 25-30 yards away easily saw the gun in my hand, so I think that the somewhat shiney stainless helped. Just my personal experience, YMMV.
