I like topping up.

The benefit is obvious, and it's less of a hassle at home than on the road:
if I have to clear the weapon during carry, it can sometimes be tricky finding
a secure place to park the loose round.

No, I load the mag to capacity, insert mag, drop slide, decock and call it good.

The difference between 15 and 16 rounds isn't worth the chance of a misfeed or the other hassles accompanying having to drop the mag again and load that top round.

There's a reason they don't load to full capacity in AR mags.

The answer is yes and no.

I use to load the chamber in all the several handguns I have around the house for HD.

A while back I installed Streamlight TLR laser/lights on a couple HD pistols.
I use one of these pistols outside every night as I'm checking and closing up the place.
Due to the possibility of the pistol being dropped, hit, etc, I don't keep a round in the chamber of these pistols.

Nope, I only have a round chambered if the pistol is secured in a holster for use. That's my rule and it works well. My HD pistols are not secured in holsters and it doesn't take a whole lot of effort to cycle the action and chamber a round.

I don't. But my HD gun is a Glock 17. If I would use a lower capactity .45 pistol I would probably do it, though. But I think that if I need more than 17 rounds, I better take a rifle anyway ;)

I keep a round in the chamber of my M&P. My wife isn't strong enough to cycle the slide. I have arthritis that acts up mostly at night. It'd be a real bummer if an emergency arose and neither of us could rack the slide! :(

I used to with my kimber 8+1. My new nightstand gun is a glock 17 so loaded with a full 17 rounds I see no need to top it off.

My HD pistol is a Beretta M9A1 with Trijicon night sights and a Streamlight M-3. I keep it fully loaded (18 rounds, 17 round 90-Two mag +1) with the safety on. That way I only need one hand to get it into action, but as it is unholstered, the safety makes me feel it is more secure. I live alone, so no other residents to worry about.

No, I just use what is in the mag...that way when I download, I don't have a "floater" floating around.

i'm very happy with my glock 19 and the 15 rounds without topping it off. i'm not sure if topping it off is necessary when i usually carry an extra mag. 30 rounds of ammo sounds like enough to get me to the 12 gauge.

Pistol? Yeah. Fully loaded, at all times.

Shotgun? Depends on which one. '97 gets 6 in the tube, one in the chamber, hammer on half cock. Mossy gets 8 in the tube, one up, safety on. Remmy gets five down, empty chamber, and slide unlocked. I'm not really familiar with the location of the remington safety, therefore I don't use it. I also don't use the remington all that much, which seems like a conspiracy to keep me unfamiliar with it. Oh well.

Rifle, levergun gets an empty chamber and a full tube, and the m1 carbine gets 15 +1, with the safety on. easiest safety in the world to click off on the way to the trigger, if needed.

I recently stopped topping off my mags w/ one of my 1911s and got better function from that magazine so I stopped topping off all together.
