I know I know, tons of threads about the 870 vs the 500, but how about these specific police/military shotguns?

Which one would you rather own...the Remington 870 Police Magnum or the Mossberg 590A1(not the regular 590!).

I just got my 590A1 about a month ago. :D

The Police Remingtons are very well made guns but quite a bit more expensive than the Mossy. The ones I saw are $700+
The Mossy is lot less expensive and not quite as heavy.
I'd buy one of the Remingtons but old model 870's and 1100's are still to be found cheap enough to mod out any way you like for < $400. They'll rival the Police models in durability.
The Mossy is neat-O because you can mount a bayonet on it.

Well, I've already got a new 870P with the walnut furniture and I found a 590A1 locally for $379...seemed like it was built like a tank! I just question the use of an aluminum receiver, and also the internals are no different than a standard 590. It's got the heavier walled barrel and, metal trigger and guard, and a metal safety, but that's it. I know the 870P is manufactured to higher tolerances than the other 870s.

Is $379 a good price on a 590A1 with mag extension...it has no GRS...

I have 3 590's...

...my adult nephew has two of the 870's.

Both are fine weapons in the hands of a competent operator.

Safe shooting,

I compared a 590A1 and a Police Magnum today...there's no comparison...the 590A1 doesn't hold a candle to the quality of the remington.

I bought my police magnum for $409 from Bud's. Really, really nice gun.
If you found one for that price, there's no choice.
However, for what I've seen them go for lately? The Mossy is holding up really well here, and these guys treat their weapons like rocks.

Regardless of what flavor ice cream folks like, saying chocolate is far better than strawberry is, end the end, just a matter of opinion. Reality is that they are both ice cream.

^^Yeah but there's no denying that steel holds up better in the long run. Aluminum simply has a shorter fatigue life(look at handguns with aluminum slides or frames, bicycles with aluminum frames etc).

Ice Cream is a pretty poor analogy if you ask me. The main ingredients of ice cream are milk and eggs...then you add the flavoring...well steel and aluminum are each made of different properties.

Also it should be noted that the 590A1 is only different from the 590, in that it has a thicker walled barrel, metal safety, and a metal trigger and guard. The internals aren't any different or made to a higher tolerance.

The 870P, however, is made to a much higher tolerance and actually has different internal parts than other 870s(ie stronger springs and a few other stronger parts).

I do like the pakerizing on the 590A1 better. I'll give them that.

glocker, I got a 500 (gasp, a single bar) from the 1960's. 3" magnums. Not cracked yet. Amazing, isn't it, that the AR is aluminum.

I really like the location of the safety on the Mossberg, but I think the Remington is more solid and of better quality.

I have owned both and prefer the 870, but I have to say that the aluminum receiver in the 500 isn't being called on to do a whole lot of work...just hold the bolt and barrel in alignment. The bolt locks up into the barrel extension, just like the 870. I am sure you could wear out a 500 under the right circumstances and after a whole lot of rounds, but most of us aren't going to wear one out, I would bet. ;)
