I think the .338-06 is the most efficient, spectacular cartridge in existence and I have kicked myself for not looking into it more years ago. Its'othing more than .30-'06 necked up to .338. It launches a 210 grain bullet at over 2700 fps. Depending on barrel length and load, it can be a s close as 100 fps behind the .338 Win Mag without the recoil and expense of the belted cases. It's accurate and the recoil is not a hell of a lot more than an '06. Weatherby makes ammo for it but it's pricey. It's WAY east to load for and doesn't cost any more than the .06 if comparable bullets are used.
As far as the 10mm shot goes, here's what I posted on another board so I won't have to type it all again.
I have killed quite a few animals with various handguns, usually revolvers. My closest was a deer at about 15 yards with a .22 revolver (long story) and my farthest was an antelope at 183 yds. with a 14" Contender in 7mm TCU. I killed a whitetail at 145 with a 12" .45-70 down in GA several years ago. I've killed 2 elk with a 5.5" Redhawk in .44 mag with 300 gr. hard-cast WFN bullets. One at about 60 yards and one at 45. I have since discovered the 10mm and got my 2nd deer with one this year. Another mulie succumbed to the awesome power of the 10mm at 0700 the morning of 6 Nov.
I was bound and determined to get my deer again this year with my G20. I passed on several within rifle range in hopes of getting within range with my pistola. I had planned to hold out until the last day and then go get one with a rifle if I couldn't make a pistol shot. This unfortunate little fork-horn wandered a little too close. I first saw him and two does at about 140 yards and it took me a bit to make sure this one was a buck. I low crawled through the grass until I got a little closer and they started acting a little nervous so I laid there and let them settle down for a minute. Then I eased up into a kneeling position and waited until he got broadside to me. The 180 gr. Hornady XTP traveling at 1300 fps at 112 yards went through both lungs. He walked around for a minute then went down. I was sure I had made a good shot but I was still approaching him slowly. A dang pheasant jumped right out from under me and scared me and the deer both. He jumped up and started running and, as sure as I was that my shot was good, I didn't want him to get into some thick brush so I shot again as he was running away from me at about 25 yards. The 2nd shot entered his left ear and came out his left eye. Sure enough, that anchored him.
The 1st bullet entered right behind the left shoulder and completely penetrated, going through both lungs, to exit in almost the exact same place on the off-side.
The unnecessary 2nd shot. Look at the eye carefully and you see that is pretty much blown up...or out, as it were.
