Dessertscout, did you mean to double tap that "1" key?

I've seen some pretty good pistoleros, and I don't doubt that it can be done, but Wow. That's all I can say is wow.

Is it a 30/06 case necked up?

EDIT: sorry its a 308 not a 30-06 also known as the 338 federal now i think its called. federal loads it. weatherby also had some loads for it too and chambered a few of their rifles in it a few years back. very nice cartridge...still like my 35 whelen abit more tho, but 338 bullets have a much greater selection to choose from

I think the .338-06 is the most efficient, spectacular cartridge in existence and I have kicked myself for not looking into it more years ago. Its'othing more than .30-'06 necked up to .338. It launches a 210 grain bullet at over 2700 fps. Depending on barrel length and load, it can be a s close as 100 fps behind the .338 Win Mag without the recoil and expense of the belted cases. It's accurate and the recoil is not a hell of a lot more than an '06. Weatherby makes ammo for it but it's pricey. It's WAY east to load for and doesn't cost any more than the .06 if comparable bullets are used.

As far as the 10mm shot goes, here's what I posted on another board so I won't have to type it all again.

I have killed quite a few animals with various handguns, usually revolvers. My closest was a deer at about 15 yards with a .22 revolver (long story) and my farthest was an antelope at 183 yds. with a 14" Contender in 7mm TCU. I killed a whitetail at 145 with a 12" .45-70 down in GA several years ago. I've killed 2 elk with a 5.5" Redhawk in .44 mag with 300 gr. hard-cast WFN bullets. One at about 60 yards and one at 45. I have since discovered the 10mm and got my 2nd deer with one this year. Another mulie succumbed to the awesome power of the 10mm at 0700 the morning of 6 Nov.

I was bound and determined to get my deer again this year with my G20. I passed on several within rifle range in hopes of getting within range with my pistola. I had planned to hold out until the last day and then go get one with a rifle if I couldn't make a pistol shot. This unfortunate little fork-horn wandered a little too close. I first saw him and two does at about 140 yards and it took me a bit to make sure this one was a buck. I low crawled through the grass until I got a little closer and they started acting a little nervous so I laid there and let them settle down for a minute. Then I eased up into a kneeling position and waited until he got broadside to me. The 180 gr. Hornady XTP traveling at 1300 fps at 112 yards went through both lungs. He walked around for a minute then went down. I was sure I had made a good shot but I was still approaching him slowly. A dang pheasant jumped right out from under me and scared me and the deer both. He jumped up and started running and, as sure as I was that my shot was good, I didn't want him to get into some thick brush so I shot again as he was running away from me at about 25 yards. The 2nd shot entered his left ear and came out his left eye. Sure enough, that anchored him.

The 1st bullet entered right behind the left shoulder and completely penetrated, going through both lungs, to exit in almost the exact same place on the off-side.

The unnecessary 2nd shot. Look at the eye carefully and you see that is pretty much blown up...or out, as it were.

No sir, it was a measured 112 yards. My G20 will consistenetly hold 3.5" groups at 50 yards and nearlt that good at 100. The first group below was before a sight change.

I wasn't calling you a liar by any means, DS. I am just amazed by the shot. There are alot of people out there more capable than me with a pistol. I feel confident out to 30 yards or so, but that's my limit. Good shooting and proof that practice does pay off.

I didn't feel that you were caling me a liar. I know people that don't practice long range handgunning have a hard time swallowing that kind of shooting but I can assure that there are a great many of us that routinely shoot at that distance and much more. Everyone that goes through my 3rd level handgunning class will shoot at 100 yards. Before the winter is over, we should have a DVD out that shows long range shooting, underwater shooting, night shooting and a variety of other fun things.

Here's a target that I shot with one of my G23's a few months ago...

I know I've posted these a few times but I'm proud of them

My best friend Matt and I both rattled out two nice Maine bucks on Public land and I also shot my first deer with a bow this year. Oh, and congrats to everyone on this thread. A lot of beautiful critters posted.

My first bow kill 105 pond doe small but good eating. I got more excited shooting her then my 2 last bucks a 213 pound 10-pt last year and my 201 11-pt this year.

This is my best friends 259 pound (field dressed) 8-pt 19 inch inside spread. That I was so nice to put him on. he rattled it out though.

This is my 201 pound (field dressed) 11-pt 21 inch inside spread buck that I rattled out third week of the season. He would have gone more than that but he had been runing does hard.

I know this is not 07-08 season but I don't think I have posted them here yet.

My 213 pound (field dressed) 10-pt 20 inch inside spread buck from last season:

My Dad's 260 pound (field dressed) 11-pt 18 1/2 inch inside spread he shot last year. It was the 5th largest buck (weight wise) shot in Maine last year. The weight is a big factor in Maine. Antlers are nice but if you tell someone you shot a nice buck the first question they will ask is how much did it weigh and then they might ask about the rack.

wow what a fat huge deer!! biggest we see here in pa seems to be 200lbs and most average in the 180 range i'd say dressed

I took this 240 LB 10-point a few weeks ago in Ill with my bow. I was hunting on a friend’s farm there. I’ve killed two other smaller bucks and one doe with my bow this season so far but this is the best one I’ve downed in a long time. I saw a couple better bucks while I was there but couldn’t get them in bow range.

Where in Illinois if you don't mind saying? The reason I ask is I am originally from Illinois (SE Central). There are some large deer around Richland County, particularly in the Bumpas bottoms.

That is one part of the state I have never visited. Were you hunting the river bottoms or uplands?
It was the uplands. My friend is a farmer and we were hunting the woods around the edges of his corn fields. He has just in the past three years started managing his deer herd. I saw all kinds of 2-1/2 year old 8-points and smaller but he doesn't want to shoot the smaller bucks. He does allow me a doe if I want one but I didn't take one.

Well, that is a nice buck. I am going to start deer hunting next year as I will have some time. Ohio is over ran with deer. I believe they estimated the herd this year at 675,000 or so. We have wasting disease in areas around the state. If they don't do something to reduce the herd we are going to have melt down here. I think you can take one antlered deer and up to either 5 or 6 unantlered depending on where you live.
