I was at my local dunhams sports today and they had 7.62x39 wolf ammo for 2.99 per box of 20. I promptly picked up 20 boxes and and asked how long the sale would be for. The guy behind the counter said they would no longer carry this line of Wolf ammo, it was being replaced with this mil-spec stuff that has some red sealer around the projectile. The new military style stuff is the same price as the older Wolf ammo, and supposed to be better. Fine by me, if i get some more extra cash here before xmas im gonna go pick up some more before its all gone.

Maybe you guys should check this out if you have a Dunhams nearby and are in the market for 7.62x39 rounds. 15 cents a round is pretty good even when buying bulk around here. Last best price i saw at a gun show was 170 dollars for 1000 rounds. even that is 17 cents a round.

Old style seen here

what is the big deal about this red stuff seen on these? can anyone elaborate?

I don't know bro?
A buddy of mine is going to sell me some of the stuff that's 3 or so years old and i'm not sure of the quality but i'll buy it up anyway. :)
1 case of hp 1000 rds and 1 case of fmj 1000rds both for $250.:D

Some of the older Wolf had a green lacquer covered case that some shooters (mostly AR owners) complained would gum up the chamber. I can't recall ever hearing of an AK with that problem and I've stuffed hundreds of rounds of lacquered ammo thru mine. That box of Mil Classic does NOT look like it's lacquered though, looks like same case as the polyformance stuff but with the case sealer.

I was there just a week ago and it wasnt on sale. I guess I should go again. Thanks for the heads-up.

Picked up 500 rounds couple months ago when it was this price.

Old style wolf stuff had a lacquer coating on it that was fine for in ARs and pretty much good to go. New stuff has a polymer coating on it that can cause the case to get stuck if it sits in a hot champer then cools down. (mainly a problem with ARs) Red stuff as already said is sealer.

The rounds are different

The round without the red sealant is 123 grain and the one with the red sealant is 124 grain. Besides one grain, the rounds are shaped and designed differently. The 123 gr HP does not expand, and is not a good home defense round, while the 124 gr HP is supposed to expand or fragment. For HD, I'd go with the 124 gr stuff, but for plinking, get the 123, because that red sealant gets everywhere inside the action and can be a pain to clean. I'm not sure of the differences with the FMJ stuff, though.

I work at a Dunham's store, and this type of ammo is still in stock, and no signs of it being switched out with the other kind. Although I wish it would switch to the 124 grain round. The regular 122grain round stinks. I get bad batches all the time. Out of a box of 20, i usually get 2-10 duds in the box. My friend's AK is the same way, and so is all the other peoples' guns that come into the store for this stuff. I have not had any problems with the 124 grain ammo. This wolf ammo is made in Russia, and was not made that great. I am just glad I am not being shot at while half my ammo are duds.

Difference

The Mil-Spec stuff is made at the Ulyanovsk plant with the redoubtable ULY 8M3 round, a very accurate and frangible round that is reputed to be the best (most effective) of the AK rounds out there. Supposedly the Uly plant makes high grade sniper type ammo so the stuff coming out of that plant (like the Wolf MC) is top notch.

Based on the results of how others have tested it, appears they are right

Academy in Houston area has Monarch 7.62x39 for 71$/500 (142$/1000). Don't go to the one at edgebrook and 45 or spencer and beltway though, cuz I bought both of them out =/
