Im sorry, I know I am asking a lot of questions. Rem 700 police, 338 Lapua. When I chamber a round i have to slide the bolt fast and then I am able to push the the bolt down. However if I chamber a round slowly and then atempt to close the bolt, it wont move and i have to push foward and down more forcefully to close the bolt. Does this make sense> Like the bolt wont close unless round is bolt is very firmly against round. I have not experienced this before. If I need to be more clear on what I am saying, please let me know. Thanks for the help.

Mark the case and bullet up with a sharpy and run it through, more than once if needed. It could be headspace, but it could also be the neck or the bullet.

reloads or factory?

If it's reloads, check factory ammo to see if it's a problem there. If it's factory, go to a smith and have your chamber checked.

Remington 700 is a push feed, snap over extractor action.
It may be that what you are feeling as you ladyfinger it closed slowly is the extractor coming up against the rim and needing an extra push to engage.

never owned one.. I like the savages.. so IF I end up getting a nice bolt action.. and I intend to.. it'll be a savage. Because of that though, I haven't looked at the r700 and how it functions very closely.

Will the caliber size make it more noticable, cause I have one in 22-250 and cant feel it with the same obviousness if you know what I mean

In addition to that, of course, the M700 ejector is a spring-loaded pin in the bolt face. If you chamber slowly, you have to both push the extractor over the rim and compress the ejector spring in that last fraction of an inch of forward movement.

A friend of mine has a M700 in 300 Winmag, I do believe his headspace is too tight, as you cannot chamber some factory ammo. So does it happen? Yep...

A test you could do is to apply scotch tape to the case head, one layer at a time and see when the bolt wont close. The tape is approx .002" thick, and you should get at least 2 pieces on without getting a stiff bolt on a factory rifle.
