Hello from new guy, Taurus question

Hello, folks.

I'm Keith and I've been lurking here for awhile. I'm considering a 9mm for various uses, and as in the boating world, I know just one won't fill all needs.

I'd like to use it to:
plink
teach my sons to shoot
home defense
concealed carry
reload
and any other thing I can think of.

I've had good experiences in the past with Taurus revolvers, but I'm leaning towards an autoloader, and I like the Taurus model 917. External safety, sa/da, hammer, decocker, high capacity.

Does anyone have any experience with this gun? Have any suggestions for an alternative in the same price range?

No experience with that one, but I'm a fan of their Millenium Pro and 24/7 Pro lines.

The 917 looks pretty big for carry though. As long as you're ok carrying a larger pistol, it would fit the bill for all other uses you listed.

I have a 24/7 in the .40 flavor. Its a very reliable gun. I had some minor FTF issues in the break in period, but those have disappeared all together, and some of them could be attributed to new shooters who were shooting my firearm. I trust the mechanics of this gun 100%. As far as ergonomics go, I have found that those of the 24/7 don't work very well for me, the grip has a far too pronounced heel to it, that would dig into the palm of my hand, instead of distributing the recoil evenly over my hand. For reference, I have roughly medium sized hands, and can grip a CZ-75 or 1911 comfortably. Once again, your mileage will vary, and I highly recomend trying one at the range if you're leaning towards the 24/7 line.

For Cary this thing is great, the actual slide is less then 1" in thickness, and the natural curve of the grip makes it disappear at a 4-o'clock position at a 30-45 degree tilt. This is on a 5'8" 120lb male, for reference. Interesting thing is the frame slightly flares out from under the slide, so the frame is thicker then the slide, by 2/10th of an inch or so.

Reliability-wise, its a champ, the external safety is nice, and the double strike capacity is also a nice piece of mind.
