Well, I'm finally doing it. I'm moving to Utah the day after tomorrow. I won't arrive until Friday night. It's roughly a twenty-five hour drive (1,677 miles) from here to there (probably do six- or seventeen hours the first day depending on how I feel. I'm pretty good at marathon driving. Last summer I went from Bangor, Maine to Ypsilanti, Michigan, non-stop), so I have to account for transit time. I'll move into my apartment on Saturday.

So, I'll be needing a Utah driver's license, state residency, tags for my car, etc.

Once I get the D/L, getting the local carry permit should be simple, yes? How does one start the process, and what all is involved?

I know of some good gun stores. Any good ranges to join? I know, I know, in Utah, you have plenty of desert to go shooting in, but until I learn my way around, some rifle ranges would be nice. A nice outdoor range, three to five hundred yards, would be nice, to hone my m4d skillZ with my up-and-coming FAL carbine.

Oh...this is completely unrelated to the gun stuff or my move, but here goes. Couple days ago I bought a car. Nice 2001 Mercury Sable LS. Had to pay cash, good thing I had plenty of money saved up from Mississippi. The other day, upon closing the trunk, what did I notice? The grinning visage of none other than Spongebob Squarepants staring back up at me, from the base of my rear window. A black outline sticker (apparently the previous owner of my car was a young woman who took to such things). I furiously tried to remove it with my ice scraper, but to no avail. How in the hell do I get this thing off?

Goo-Gone. You can get it anywhere. Let it soak on the sticker for a while.

Welcome!
I'm assuming you're moving into the Salt Lake valley?
Let me know when you get in and settled I'll show you around.
The range to join is the Holladay gun club. Otherwise, the decent ranges are public or pay to play.
Take the class, pass the checks, get the permit. I'm not aware of any residency restrictions.
http://bci.utah.gov/CFP/CFPHome.html is the site you need to visit.

I'm not sure who's got a 300-500 range...I'm going to have to show you where to go in the desert for that.

NC, I teach CCW classes. I do about 4-5 a month. I can walk you through it. It is really simple.

There aren't that many good places to shoot in the SL valley. Holiday is okay. Lee Kay won't let you do anything fun, but goes out to 300. (slow fire only, no holster stuff, 1 shot a second). WSA is okay, but further north. Parleys is okay, but also out of the way, and small. There is one in door range, and it is small, you can't breathe and it periodically catches on fire.

There are lots of places to shoot in the desert, but you're looking at about an hours drive, at minimum, to get anywhere.

I'm building a 24 bay, 50 meter in door range in Draper, but it probably won't open until the end of '06.

As far as good gunstores, I'm kind of biased. FBMG rules. :p

I didn't know Lee Kay had a 300.
The thing I don't like about lee kay is the crotchety old farts that run the place. I know they're volunteers....you get what you pay for.
At least its cheap.
I've shot at that PMAA range up parley's. Its okay, kind of out of the way unless you live in SLC proper.
Doug's is the smokey, firey cesshole he's talking about.
I've heard good things about Rangemasters, its about 40 minutes from SLC proper. http://www.rangemasters.com/
IIRC Impact has a range, but no info on the website. I'd say they are the second coolest gunshop around. :neener:

Gallenson's downtown is a good shop. No range.

NC

Welcome!!!!

Already got the most critical info on the thread no need to repeat. Cabelas's is a must. West desert is good. Impact Gun range in Ogden is worth the drive atleast until Correia gets his place open.:D but you have got to get there early on a Saturday or you have to wait for a lane. If you are into handguns which it sounds like you are check out this web site

For general information about the shooting sports in the area check out this web site it has alot of really good info.

Good Luck and like I said WELCOME

Rangemasters is a nice place to shoot if you're down south; good guys running the place too.

A big +1 for FBMG as well (it's nice having a gun store 2 blocks away).

I think Utah should be a good foundation for a few (if not several) good stories. (hint, hint)

Actually, I've just finished the final going-over of my original. Now I'm going to leave it alone and call it good, lest I edit it to ruination, like George Lucas.

If I write a sequel, it'll likely take place in Qatar. :D

Well folks, this is it. Tomorrow morning I pack up and leave for Utah. I'm excited, and my mom is about bawling. But I gotta go where the job is. I've got a 25 hour drive ahead of me, and I'll be offline until I get my internet hooked up in my new apartment. Could be as late as the middle of next week.

Wish me luck...

Nightcrawler;

Upon establishing a residence, you may be visited by nice young people, repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly.

They haven't bothered us much more here than anywhere else I've lived. I've also got a sign on the door that says "no soliciting, religious OR sales", which cuts down on stuff like that.

Gun Range

I would go here sometimes when I lived in Layton. if you get there on the right day or at the right time it's deserted. You'll be the only one shooting, its kind of nice.

Oh yeah I also think that Impact is worth the trip. Nice eye candy. But a better trip IMO is The Gift Shop on 25th street in Ogden. Sometimes you can find a real gem in there at a good price.

Well, I'm here. Settled in and back online now. DSL at long last!

The company that I had applied with, who had called me and asked me if I was interested, isn't hiring now. Argh. Job hunt begins in earnest tomorrow. Have a few more contacts to follow up on.

A couple days ago, it was seventy degrees. Yesterday it rained. Today we had a snow storm. What's WITH this place? Snow in April is one of the things I left Michigan to get away from.

Of course, everyone, from my friends, to my mom, to the girl at the McDonald's window, insists that I must've brought the bad weather with me from my icy homeworld of Hoth.

Who, me?

Nightcrawler sorry to here about your job but Utah only has about a 3% unemployment rate so it should not take long. As far as this crazy weather this is strange. It will get nice real soon.

Good Luck
