As you have probably read in previous posts, I recently purchased a Draco pistol that I'm looking into converting into an SBR.

Question(s): What kind of folding stock would be the most comfortable? Easiest to install? Affordable? Specifically, what would you recommend would be the best way to go through with this?

Any and all opinions are welcome!

(BTW: I have seen and read other posts about this subject but I don't really think they covered all the specific questions I'm asking about)

When looking at ace stocks be careful before you buy. Some have the piece of metal that sticks out from the rifle to attach to the stock (can't think of the proper term >=O ) and some don't.

Since its a pistol I would assume it doesn't..
Are you going to have to do some cutting for this? Or is it just a short ak minus the attached stock?

Ace stocks are modular (like Lego bricks).

Any that you see "all together" have already had their parts chosen and been assembled by someone else.

Make your own choices and you won't have any "surprise" issues.

It is an unfinished Romanian carbine (the "go fast" parts and butt stock were not installed at the factory) with a flat butt cap.

All that is necessary is the attaching of the stock (after you get your approved form 1, of course). Smart folks do a rear block transplant, and have a fixed AK stock tang installed in place of the butt cap.

There is a huge "How do i SBR my Draco?" thread here with lots of illustrative pictures.

Nalioth,

Thanks a lot for the info! I figured you'de chime into this thread haha. I've been doing a lot of searching on the net but I think it's gonna come down to either the wire folder (polish style) or the ace stock as you have mentioned. Do you happen to have any idea how much it would run to have a gunsmith do the work??? I'd do it myself but I would lose a lot of sleep if I made the slightest mistake!

And yeah Carter, just got the thing and I'm already messing with it! I always gotta be doing something. Gotta stay productive lol

Enachos, I have no idea what a 'smith would charge to change out the rear block.

I DO know you'll need to find a 'smith that can spell "Kalashnikov" to do it.

Кала́шников ?

Good luck finding a gunsmith that speaks Russian, heheheh

Check DPH arms for a stock that is compatible with the ace folder mechanism. I have also recently seen on another forum someone who put a very good looking one together with an ace folder and MOE stock.

The simplest stocks to use would be the Hungarian and Romanian/German/Polish wire sidefolders. They will need a new rear trunnion, but the trunnions are just two rivets to install. The Romanian/German/Polish ones will allow you to swap to a fixed stock, the Hungarian won't. I believe the Ace folders use the same trunnion as the Romanian ones.

Most people consider the Russian triangle sidefolder to be best in terms of feel and quality. They are more expensive, though, and require installation of a locking catch under the front trunnion as well as a proprietary rear trunnion.

IMO, the Chinese Type 56 stock is better than the Russian ones. The Chinese has a better cheek weld, and doesn't require a locking latch. They are very rare to find as parts, but you can actually get a cheap Chinese air gun that uses a military folding stock (http://cheapairguns.pellettrap.com/). I got one of those (from CTD, though they appear to have run out of them) and will be adapting it to proper rear trunnion (the airgun trunnion is not interchangeable with an AK) when my Form 1 comes back.

Only if you use the "no-mods" adapter block.

Ace sells two types of adapter block:

One in which you cut the tang and the block mounts flush with the end of the receiver.

One which just bolts to the existing stock tang (it's about 1½" long). This one'll put your hinge point 1½" from the back of the receiver (if you use a folding mechanism).

I don't like wire folders. I need a repeatable cheek weld to shoot well. Wire folders also are not as comfortable as other stocks IMO. I would go with an ace folding mechanism and a compatible stock of your choice.

Shannon at Coal Creek has cut and rewelded AK tangs to make different AK types for friends of mine and won't have any trouble with this sort of thing.

I'm not aware of any AK variants as short as this so you can play with the looks instead of trying to be authentic. If you want you can put an Ace adapter on it by screwing and tacking.

May I introduce you to the Romanian AIMS-R carbine:

This is the gun that the Romanians leave "unfinished" and ship over here as "pistols".

Ace stock + hinge mechanism + drill + 10-32 tap =

It was really easy. You don't need an Ace "receiver block", no trunnion replacement, just the stock and the hinge. Ace has several stocks that use the same hinge mechanism, so you have some options there. If you want to be super secure, you could use 10-32 bolts long enough to go all the way through the trunnion and use nuts on the inside of the receiver. I don't think it's necessary though, I used blue loc-tite on the screws and I've beat the snot out of it, it hasn't loosened up yet.

I still don't think there's enough "meat" in the rear block for this method to last . . .
