Bear with me for a noob question. Yes, I searched first... ;)

I'm considering getting a Byelorussian scope for my Russian 7,62x39 to nail those 150-200 meter targets my Kobra dot covers entirely :p

I've the choice between POSP versions 4 x 24, 6 x 24, 6 x 42 and 8 x 42. I guess the first number refers to the magnification power of the scope, but what's the second number for? Any recommendations for practical/3-gun style shooting with the caliber above?

The gun is a Saiga M03-EXP-01 in original AK-103 style config, with the superb Russian side mount that'll accommodate these scopes with no hassle.

Thanks for your time.

4x32 means 4 power magnification, and the objective lens (the one facing the target) has a diameter of 32 millimeters.

A 12-34x50 scope has variable magnification of 12 at the minimum, and 34 at the maximum, but you cans elect anything in between. The diameter of the objective lens is 50 millimeters.

Oh. No mystical mathematics involved at all. I guess then that the only thing that is influenced by the lens diameter would be the amount of light the scope can gather. And overall weight, obviously.

Anyone with scoped AK experience/opinion then? All input will be appreciated.

Also the larger the objective lens, you have a wider field of view down range, and it will allow more light into the scope.

(if I remember correctly...)

RTFM

POSP 4x24 would be my recommendation. Fits the receiver siderail, excellent optics, rangefinding illuminated reticle with mil markings and multiple aiming chevrons, tough as nails, and only $110 or so. (Get the 400-meter scale, not the 1000-meter version; it's much more practical.) You can see 200-yard targets very well with this scope (I have one for my SAR-1). Holds zero well when removed and replaced. FWIW, 6-power is too much magnification for an AK type rifle, IMO; you can see out to 300 or 400 meters fine with the 4x, and it's less bulky and more usable at <100 yards.

FWIW, I ordered my POSP 4x24 from nightvisionweb and had a good experience with them.

Thank you very much for the exact input! Next week I'll go get a 4x24. It's a local hobbyist/entrepreneur that imports direct (I mean, Russia is just behind the border here...) so I'll support his business. Already got my Kobra thru him last year.

Although, seeing nightvisionweb's assortment, the 2.5-5x24 Zoom would sound intriguing... my man doesn't carry that, though. And I guess that a zoom function in this price class might be overdoing it :scrutiny:
