I have an m+m m10 Romanian ak and a Windham weaponry SRC . I have an optic for the ar and have only 99 rounds through it I haven't shot the ak. I'm moving away to go to college and needed money I like both platforms. Whatever one I keep is staying with my ma. She probably won't clean it very often if at all. She was in the army so she knows the ar and how to clean it but really doesn't seem very keen on doing so. So I ask what rifle do you guys think I should sell.

An AR doesn't need to be cleaned religiously. Just squirt some oil in it every once in a while to keep it wet, and wipe it down when it gets too dirty.

I was in the same situation as you a couple years ago (I had a Rock River AR with optic, and a Romanian SAR-1 with optic) and I decided to keep the AR.

Two thoughts:

1. Sell the one you can get the most money for

2. Since you haven't shot the AK you won't know what you're missing

So... I would shoot the AK and decide which was worth more to me.

I've gotten offers for the ar , my buddy wants it. I'd love a trade for a Polish tantal but none of my friends have one.

Sell the AR. You'll likely get more for it and will be able to shoot the AK for less per round.

Training your mother on the maintenance and operation of the AK should take all of about an hour.

That also seems to defeat the purpose of selling one to raise funds.

Personally, I'd keep the AR. I tried more than once (5 times, actually) to like the AK, including some rather high dollar ones. Still a no-go.

Oh the trade part, I'd have sold one rifle and traded the other . I wish I could bring whatever one I chose with me but I'd be in dorms and I'll be in NY for school :/. I'm not sure shed use it for defense she takes absolutely nothing seriously. It turns into I don't need a gun I'll throw the cat at them. Or she thinks she'll fight them. If I end up keeping the ak how do you think the import of cheap Russian ammo is going to be effected by this whole exec order thing?

So far, the EO focuses on Kalashnikov, not on other companies and ammo.

College in New York? Might's well sell both and focus on school. There will always be plenty of rifles around. And the main thing with school is a program that's likely to set you up in a career field that has job opportunity. Ethnic studies or underwater basket-weaving won't cut it. :D

Very true , tho now I'll have to change my major from basket weaving to something more reasonable. If I sell both and somehow some way they manage to stop folks from purchasing rifles in the next 8 years I'd be upset that's why I was going to keep one.

Just a thought.

Eight years, eh? Sounds like a serious major in candle making.;)

I would consider selling the AK. There is plenty of cheap ammo for one right now but with the saber clashing between Washington and the Kremlin I would not be surprised if the supply dries up or the prices doubles. The AR platform has so many options with good triggers, springs and uppers. You couple that with a NATO round that will be here for a long time and you have a win/win situation.

As for storage, clean it and slip it into a silicon impregnated Boar Store and you won't have to worry about it. If you can't find a Boar Store, PM me. I'll send you one of mine.

keep the ar. mom is familair with it, and it won't really need much, if any maintenance. if you plan to visit home at all during your time in school, you can clean and rub it down then.

good luck with school. i hope that degree in plastic floral arrangements pays off. ;)

The market is flooded with AR's right now with big box stores like Cabelas running them on sale regularly. Obama is a dead duck President and there will not be any more gun control laws passed on the Federal level for next two years.

Neither rifle needs much in the way of maintenance. Oil it before you leave for beginning of the semister and we you are home during breaks. Classes are only for four months so you will have many opportunities to come home.

IMHO the AK will be easier to sell due do the worsing relationship with Russia.

This first, if you decide you like them both about equally, I'd sell the AK the you might get slightly above market value with the situation in Ukraine.

Whichever you keep just oil it good before you leave and it shouldn't matter if mom doesn't touch it.

I definitely feel l need to shoot the ak before selling it, I've had it for over a year and somehow never managed to take it to the range. My friends coming over in a week or two to decide which one he wants. So I guess sits mostly in his hands. Probably going to the range so he can test fire both which means I shouldbget a shot at the ak ( extra points for puns right? ) 8 years for a doctorate in psychology hopefully I could do some good for some veterans and open my own practice specifically for them. Would also probably be good for there to be at least one pro-gun shrink.

I'd sell the AR. That run of the mill AR will fetch you more money and that Romanian AK is a good one, with a CHF barrel. AR's are still dropping in price while AK's of any variety have been holding quite steady and are likely to go up in the near future (lets face it, even non affected AK's will likely gain a price boost during the ensuing EO panic).

So sell the AR because its a buyers market for them a the moment, and keep the AK because its a sellers market for them?

Sell the AR they will always be available, the AK's are starting to be harder and harder to get.

Not that I'd ever contribute to thread drift...

My mother got her PhD in Psych in 1942. Taught at UT until a Fulbright to the Philippines in '49. Wound up with a CIA job for a while, and then became a clinic director in the Florida state mental health system.

IOW, "Life happens" and you never know where you'll wind up. :)

No. Sell the AR before they drop in value further, keep the AK until its value climbs and sell at the peak.

Sell the depreciating asset first and hold onto the appreciating asset.
