I recently purchased a Ruger Precision Rimfire Rife in .17 HMR. What an accurate and easy shooting firearm! Even with my 75 year old eyesight and an economical Sig Whiskey scope, I could easily fit groups inside a quarter at 100 yards. I'm thinking about getting a Ruger Precision Rifle in 308 and was wonder who has experience with one (in any caliber). I have a Windham Weaponry AR-10 (SRC-308) which I like very much, and it shoots well enough, better than I can shoot it - 2-3 MOA at 100 yards, good enough for me at least. I shot the buffalo at Whittington a few years ago with the AR-10 (only took 18 shots). Ha! Anyway, I'm thinking of selling my AR-10 and getting the Ruger Precision Rifle as a replacement. Just wondering what experience is out there.

1) I wouldn’t sell an AR-10 right now.

2) RPR is good to go. Very accurate rifles for the money. A little light for a dedicated long range rifle, a little heavy for a long range capable hunting rifle, but versatile as it is. I had the Gen 1 in 243win and Gen 2’s in 6.5 and 6 creed, but have shot against several 6.5 creed and 308win RPR’s in the same squad many times in the last handful of years. Very capable rifles when well fed.

I wouldn’t sell a semi-auto right now to pay for a bolt gun.

Second, I did not love my RPR in 308. Nothing terribly wrong with. It was fairly accurate, but not especially so. The factory butt stock was clumsy and uncomfortable. Me and my buddy bought RPRs at the same time and both of us got rid of them within a year. There was just nothing overly impressive about them.

I spent some time behind my buddies RPR in .308. Dont like the cartridge, like the gun well enough, but prefer more traditional stock designs so probably wont ever buy one unless i get a killer deal. To be fair I dont care to shoot ARs very much either because of the way they feel....so take that for what its worth.

My friend has a Gen2 in 6.5 Creedmoor, and a new one in 300 PRC. I've shot the 6.5 and first time shooting shot one of the best groups I'd ever shot. Pretty sure it was/is basically bone stock. They seem good to go, but not something I'd be interested in. You probably won't use it for hunting of any sort, I wouldn't.

Yes, that’s why I’m curious. Current events have made the demand for firearms higher than ever, so logically, prices are higher than ever. If I had a firearm I didn’t want, it seems to me now would be the best time to part with it.
That’s incorrect?
You're correct as long as you really don't want it AND have some other semi auto for SHTF.

As for the RPR I love mine in 6mm Creed, a 308 wouldn't interest me much the Creeds just shoot much flatter.

Have one of the first 6.5s that came off the line and have been tickled with it from day one. I need better glass for it, but even with a SWFA 10x it makes 500 yards on steel pretty easy. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything by having the Gen 1. It is an easy gun to shoot and reload for.

I only have experience shooting a rented RPR in 6mm Creed during a 2-day long range rifle class, but I hit the milk jug at 1,000 yards with my second shot. And I suck at rifle shooting. So I'm a fan. :D

I would stick with the AR 10 just because I can't say I'd have any real purpose for the RPR. I'm sure they're nice guns but a general purpose AR or more of a hunting focused bolt gun would be much more useful to me. I suppose that's why I own several of those but no RPR. Do what makes you happy. If you have other AR platform rifles you can probably part with the Windham and you'd probably get top dollar for it right now.
