Your first AR should look like this. Everything you need except the rear sight and nothing you don't

...or like this

Add a few magazines, a pile of ammo and shoot it until your tennis shoes are covered in empties. Along the way, you'll find out what works and what doesn't. If you're serious about getting a good AR the first time, the easiest way is to either get the BCM (top picture) or the Colt (bottom picture). Stick to the 16" barrel as changes to the upper will be easier than with the 14.5" barrel and permanently installed muzzle device.

If you try to get an AR with all the bells & whistles right out of the gate, not only will it be more expensive than a plain carbine, you'll end up with features you don't like and will spend even more money changing them.

Of course it's your choice, but regardless of what you do, experience and honesty with yourself will bring you back to this conclusion

Heck for range use just about any of them will do. Obviously there are heavy precision guns and light carbines and just about everything between.

MistWolf has got it right, if all you plan on using it for is range use a simple AR-15 is your best bet, later you can get a new upper and what not for it. I would get the permanently attached carry handle for the initial start up though, that way you can start sighting it in immediately and not have to worry about deciding what type of rear sight you're going to get. Just keep shooting it till you're up to your elbows in brass.:D
