I want an AK. I know very little about them, or all the weird laws surrounding the imports, so bear with me please.

What I want is a Vietnam era looking underfolder. Doesn't have to be "exact", just close to that type, with wood forend. Just for fun plinking, doesn't have to be something collectible, but I would like to get something
as reliable as possible, not just a bargain.

What I find that most closely resembles what I'm after is called by the seller a
"Yugo Zastava M70 AK47 Underfolder", and the price is $699.95.

The description is
"Super thick 1.5 mil. reinforced receiver, rivited construction, Duracote finish. Fully functional, folding stock."

So.

Is that a reliable model? Is that a proper price? Is there another out there that I should be looking for?

Thanks for the help folks!

Well its a built gun, so it would help to tell us the builder.

Pretty much the cheapest underfolder out there at the moment is a build from vector. http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/expand.asp?Prodid=8 They're 5 something IIRC.

Or you could buy a romanian parts kit, an underfolder stock, and have it built up.

Both of those would be cheaper than $700, be just as good/reliable, and have chrome lined bores (which the yugo you're looking at doesnt).

If you want more info let me know and i'll start digging up links and prices for parts and builders.

I would personally say, avoid it. Underfolders look nice but... ehhh... well I'm not going to start one of those debates. The Yugo m70s have non-chrome lined barrels and a lot of the barrels are in horrible condition. I'd think about a GP WASR 10.

The new "cheapie" is the WASR 10. I'd recommend a GP WASR 10. They have a very nice two-stage trigger and are about $360 (-$400 depending on if you order it from a company like AIM Surplus or buy it at your local gunshop or at a gun show.

If you get a GP WASR-10, make sure the front sight block and gas block aren't canted. Here's some helpful links.

$319!

I have a GP WASR-10 and it's a GREAT RIFLE. I like the trigger A LOT better than my old SAR-1.

Best of luck.

Heh, I just realized you said you specifically wanted an underfolder. Why is it I often read the first sentence then reply? DOH! :banghead:

Ahhh I just realized why - I'm a product of the public education system!

The WASRs come with G2 fire control groups now, and yes they are very nice. You can add one to any AK for under $35. I'm probably going to get a set for my SAR-3, since its not nearly as smooth as my 74 with a G2.

Thanks for the info folks.

The one I was looking at was built by "Red Jacket", but I have no idea what all that means.

What is a "G2" trigger group, and where does one get one?

My SAR-1 trigger is very smooth, but it exhibits a bit of slap with certain finger positions, and I'd like to fix that, but prefer a drop-in solution to a bunch of dremeling.

Tapco's is double-hook. I think the SAR has a single-hook trigger, but could easily be wrong. Anyone know?

Tapco has both, i just linked the wrong one. You're right though, the SAR uses a single hook.
