I've been struggling with this question for a while now.

Should I get This Howa M-1500

Or should I get This Remington 770?

They're both relatively cheap. The Howa is about $100-$200 more but I've heard that the Remington 770 isn't all that great. Could someone confirm or deny this?

And now the really big question, which caliber? .308 or .30-06? Would either one be ok for a little deer hunting? I probably won't ever actually take it hunting but I'd like to be able to if I ever wanted to.

Anyway, thanks.

Mike

The Rem 770 is a re-named 710. The 710 developed a bad reputation with plastic parts and press fit barrels. I'd go with the Howa 1500. I've got a 1500 in 300 Win Mag and another in 308 Win. They are great shooters.

Go with the 770 I have info here:

5 5 shot groups in 7mm

140g accutip 3.031in

140g core-lokt 3.454in

150g sierra matchking handload .794in yes .794in

(3 of the 150g were in a .240 in overlap)

Think I'm lying read November 2007 Outdoor life page 78

(Test was done by Jim Carmichal)

but I've heard that the Remington 770 isn't all that great

That's about an understatement! kinda like saying the American civil war was just a minor misunderstanding between the state governments.

Don't walk away from a rem 710-770 RUN!

Howa is a very good rifle. The Remington 770.....ummm, not so much.

The Remington 770/710 sucked so bad that they had to change it's name to escape the horrible reputation it has earned.

On the flip side, the Howa is pretty much the same as the Weatherby Vanguard. Howa makes those for Weatherby, just a different stock, and some other minor differences. Same action and barrel.

I have a Vanguard, so I can speak from experience on them. It consistantly shoots under 1", and usually under .75". I have several groups that are below .4" as well.

Only downside is that it is a heavy beast, but it's reliable, it's accurate, and it's not very expensive. The bolt is smooth, unlike the gritty bolt on the 710/770.

The Howa is a much better gun than the 710/770 will ever be. Remington should really have stayed away from a 7xx designation on this one, it's not even close to the 700 model.

Hint: Look in catalogs for such items as scope mounts or aftermarket triggers, stocks, etc., etc.

Then buy a Remington 700.

I don't doubt that Jim could get the thing to shoot with a particular load, but at the same time, I didn't see him shooting a 770 at the Supershoot...

Have you taken a look at the savage stevens line? The stevens 200 favorite rifle is reliable and ridiculously accurate for the price.

The Howa Model 1500 Lightning has an excellent factory trigger and uses Remington Model 700 scope mount bases. The Remington 700 would also be an excellent choice.

bogie, the Howa takes the same scope mounting bases as the Remington 700. I would take the Howa hands town and twice on Tuesday over the 770. I would probably take the Howa over the 700 as it is a very smooth and strong action. I once owned a Howa 1500 and it was a very nice rifle.

I have owned both a Howa 1500 and Remington 700. I still own the Howa. 'Nuff said?

Get the Howa, or Weatherby Vanguard (which is essentially the same rifle)...

I have a number of Howa/Vanguards, and only one Remington 700 (and that only because Howa doesn't make the 1500/Vanguard in 8x57mm Mauser. And I've asked them to do exactly that too. I'd buy another Howa if they did :))...

Use the 710/770 for a tomato stake...

On second thought, the tomatoes probably wouldn't like it either.

As you've doubtless already been told - the 770 is a fraction of the rifle that the Howa is. Not that the 770 *can't* be OK, but it's clearly not engineered to the same level as the Howa.

The extra dollars for the Howa are well worth it.

Most definitely. The 700 is heads and shoulders better than the 770. Whereas the 770 is a cheaply-made cheap rifle that can only be stripped for parts when the barrel is shot out, with a receiver made from mild-steel and a pressed-in barrel, the 700 is a fine rifle and well worth owning.

My friend saw an ad for the rem 770 from gander mountain a month or so ago and asked me if it was a decent deal, I steered him far away from it and towards a Tikka which he is incredibly happy with. The Howa is far and away better than the 770, guaranteed.

I wish I had a dollar for every Wal-Mart 770 that comes in to my shop because the 770 has some issues and Wal-Mart wont deal with them.
Stay away from the 770. If you want a cheap Remington get a 798 or a 700 SPS.
But between the 770 and the Howa, I'd take the Howa.

krochus - +1.
