None of the above.

I recently bought my son a really nice sporterized Springfield 03-A3 for $200. It is very accurate and the trigger is pretty nice too.

My second choice would be an older Rem 700. I have seen them for $300.

yes you are correct, and the stevens 200 trigger isn't that hard to adjust....even though it doesn't have an accu-trigger.:fire::neener: more or less it comes down to the name. the XL7 certainly is something to consider

I'm surprised the Marlin XL7 didn't make the list...

I understand it probably should, and perhaps should be at the top of the list.

However, few of us have seen one yet.

How's yours?

Marlin XL7 Review by Shooting TImes Magazine

Well, considering I've only shot it enough to sight in the scope, it shoots as well as any Stevens out of the box. (Sub-MOA @ 100 yds) I haven't played with the trigger at all, I like it where it's at right now... My 7mm-08 shoots <1.5" @ 200 yards

For right at $300.08 out the door, it's great! A little better balanced than the Stevens in my opinion.

The Vanguard is made of forged steel, and has a 3-shot, 1.5" @ 100 yards guarantee.

Just to wrap up this thread, the Savage 111 got 29 votes and the Savage-Stevens 200 got 25, first and second place, respectively, so it seems to be resounding win for Savage. Follow link at the top of the page for complete poll results.

I still think the ease of barrel changes always makes the Savage the first choice. You never know, you may want to slap a 6BR on that in a few months.

Go with the 03 or -- better yet, in my opinion -- find a nice M1917 to team up with that Garand and chow down on that M2 ammo.
You will not be sorry.

Much as I love the Savage 111/110 with accutrigger, they do have some annoying points. First, the butt pad that's included is really bad, and unless you want to use a slip on, aftermarkets don't fit exactly flush (maybe only annoying to me). Secondly, it really does kick pretty hard considering its caliber.. something like a Weatherby or a Browning reduce recoil much better. That being said, it's an accurate, well made reliable rifle, and certainly is inexpensive. The combo units at Walmart go for less than $400, though the included scopes are worthless (usually Simmons). Overall, I'd have to vote for the Weatherby.

The Stevens is far and away the best value. $300 for a rifle that can shoot MOA or better out of the box is hard to beat. Not to mention, the aftermarket for it, it will accept just about any Savage 10/110 accessory. The trigger can be adjusted down to about 3 1/2 ish lbs. Barrel swaps are a breeze... hmmm.... Stocks are a plenty... drilled and tapped for all the major brand scope bases... etc...
