looking to buy a good starter deer rifle, any thoughts? a friend suggested the remington 770 with scope in 30 06 round . should i be concerned about buying a rifle with out iron sites and just scope. thanks for any info

770 is kind of Remington's answer to Walmart's demand for a cheap centerfire. It will shoot, yes. It will kill deer, yes. And if all you want to do is take 4 shots a year, at deer, with a rifle, likely it will do the job just fine.

However, I would suggest taking a look at a Savage. They are known for excellent accuracy and are usually at bargain prices, granted you would then need to factor in a scope. Also, you will get a much better gun, solidly built, and long lasting.

Run from the 770, the Marlin or Stevens for about the same money is a much better gun.

if that is the one they sell at wal mart i would stay away from it. i handled one onece and the bolt felt like trying to drag a stick through chunky mud. i would look around and get something better...i have been impressed with several of the savage rifles i have handled.

walmart occasionally has Remington 700 ADL's for about 300..i got a 243 and they had a 270 out the door for about 350...had iron sights so you could shoot right away then you could add a scope later
