Take it to a locksmith. He will have a special "pick" to line up the tumblers and open it. Shouldn't cost much, takes about five - ten minutes.

Frustrating isn't it.

When I was living in California, took a trip with teh famil to Idaho to visit friends. Took a few of my rifles and pistols along for some fun.

Got there and realized I had left the keys for the rifle case at home...so I had to shoot the master lock off with my .45.

Was pretty scarry, knowing that I could possibly damage all the rifles and gear inside, but I had to get my shoot on.

Turned out, the key was back at the friends house on my wife's key ring.

I would honestly try the locksmith.

Put a bit of tension on the lock mechanism. Now in a calm mood and quiet space, slowly turn the tumblers till you feel a bit of give. That is usually the correct number. Keep doing this till you get eveything to to work and it opens up.

I have picked several locks that way it it just takes some time and a delicate touch. It won't work for every lock, but you can usually get the cheap ones pretty quickly.

Seems all good advice, but if you just want "in", there's always a "Dremel"....

This must have been a bad weekend for locks. I went to open my cheap gun safe from the hardware store, and one of the locks would not turn completely. I think a sling on a rifle was tangled up in it. I ended up slowly laying it down on it's side before I got in. :what:

The one rifle wearing a sling is now in the other side, near the hinge, instead of the lock.

I feel for you. Try "picking" the lock first as suggested above.

You can also look at the hinge on the case. If the hinge pin is simply peened in place or capped and it is exposed you can use a dremel or grinding wheel to take the end off and then drive it through with a punch. Simple to replace later. More than one way to open a locked box...

I had a similar situation about two years ago. I'd forgotten the combination to a small safe I use to hold my handguns. Ack! Luckily, one of the top locksmiths in North America lives in SW PA. I was pretty ticked at myself. Picked up the safe and carried it to the car. (Yeah, I know, any safe you can carry - no matter how much strain - is too light!)

He literally had the thing open in about 15 seconds. He just manipulated the dial, and pop, there you go.

Lesson learned? My safe is only good for keeping little kids away from my pistols. If that. ;)

Where you drunk? I've never heard of someone shooting a lock off in real life...

I bought a rifle case from Dick's Sporting goods once that was locked and the store didn't know the combo. I got the manager to take 30 bucks off the price because it was ship it back or pay an employee to slowly try all the combos..... I gave my 12yo son $5 to scroll though until he found it.... it only took him about 10 mins. :D

Nope not drunk, never drink while I am shooting or carrying a firearm. Just really wanted to shoot that day, and had no other available way to get the lock off. :D

My buddy tried shooting a master lock off on a gate that someone locked behind him. He had lead splatter on most of the front of his body. I wouldn't recommend shooting locks off with a .45 or other hand gun. Try backing off a 100yards with your .308 or other suitable rifle caliber. I'd seek some professional help if you want to save the case.
