I Know you shouldn't buy a rifle if you don't know what it is, but what can I say. I liked it. If this isn't the forum to ask for help, would someone point me in the right direction? It (the rifle) has no manufacturers name, no designation of what cartridge it fires, all it has is a bunch of proofs and other markings on it. It is a bolt action, with bolt handle sticking straight out and has about the longest barrel I have ever seen. Any suggestions? Thanks. Oh yeah. The guy who sold it to me said he thought it was Norwegian but I can't find anything that looks like it online.

Take a picture, post it up here or in Harley's forum... lots of smart learned folks here.

And welcome aboard.

If you can get good pix {or describe them well} of the various markings, it probably can be indentified.

One way to make the marks stand out is to use one of those white/yellow grease pencils, also known as a china marker. Rub some of that over the marks, so that they fill in, and they should show up quite well agasint the blue/black finish of the metal.

So who's gonna take some bets as to what the rifle is? I'll guess 91/30. Wasted post I suppose, but i'm bored at work ;)

If you can't post pics - start looking here. Scroll thru the rifles on the left and pull up each one's main page. Chances are you'll see your rifle in the choices.

Look on the barrel towards the end. If it is an import it will have importer information, caliber, and type of rifle. What kind of sights does it have? Does it have a semi-pistol grip like a hunting rifle or shotgun, or does it have a straight grip like some old double-barrel shotguns? What color is the bolt? Describe some of the proofs.

This is all, of course, assuming you can't take a picture of it for us.

Post the markings. The arsenal name, etc. will be a major clue, if present. Are the letters Cyrillic? Probably Russian/Soviet. Maybe Polish?

If it's Norwegian, it's probably a Krag-Jorgensen. Does it refer to Koningsberg Arsenal? Does it say, Carl Gustav? (Swedish)?

As is, you're asking if we're clairvoyant. Give us a clue or two, Sherlock!

The problem is, the Swede is obviously Carl Gustof, Husky, or Mauser, their names are stamped on it. The same goes for Turkish (K. Kale or Ankara) and CZ (Ceska Zbrojovka) Mausers. Even M91 Mosins have manufactures stamped on them, if in Russian (not counting Remington or NEW, which would provide no mistake). Unless the markings have been scrubbed, which makes all bets off, the only long rifle generally available with a straight bolt and no manufacture's marking is the 91/30, but those marks are obviously NOT Norse in origin. Perhaps it is an older black-powder bolt gun like a Kropecheck (sic), Beaumont, or the like?

Hmmm . . . I suppose it might be Norwegian like the seller guessed, but just from the description (bolt action, straight bolt handle, long barrel) it could be an Arisaka.

Markings

Okay guys, I just wanted to make sure this was the forum to use. I checked out the surplusrifle.com and none of those matched. I will get some pics and post them ASAP. Just for the record There is a BIG 39 on the bottom of the reciever, in a couple of places it has a Pa marking and either an AS or A5 marking. I will get the photos asap. I do not think the stock is original but I will get a photo of it all together as well. Thanks for the help. John

Here's the images

I hope these are clear enough.

Japanese Type I rifle, 1939. It is a wartime expedient using a modified Carcano action and Arisaka-style magazine and furniture. Original calibre 6.5 x 50. Yours has been sporterised btw: the original had full wood.

That is really quite a cool rifle, a merger between a Carcano and Arisaka. More Carcano than Ari, of course, but very interesting as a collector. A shame the stock has been butchered, but there could be hope for that rifle.

I was thinking Arisaka, but I would have expected him to say Asian writing was on it!

Too bad, with the original stock and such, it would have been a nice rifle.

Thank you.

Thanks. As soon as I can get some ammo and get the headspace checked, I will go out and shoot the snot out of it. Would anyone know the best place to find an origianl replacement stock if they are available? Thanks again. John
