I posted a while back about buying a Browning A-bolt. While I was developing loads I was consistantly grouping just over half an inch at 100 with 52 grain sierra match kings. when I got the load right i was getting 5 shot groups at 3/8th of an inch. then I decided I would fill the but of the synthetic stock up with metal ment (similar to devcon liquid steel) to make the rifle more evenly weighted and to reduce recoil so i can maintain a sight picture through recoil. then when I shot it it was grouping over an inch so i removed all the metal mend but things havent got much better. The best group i can manage is 3/4 of an inch at best. can anyone give me any sugestions as to what went wrong in doing this and what i might be able to do to fix it.

Did you remove the stock from the action? Sometimes when you put it back on something as simple as the action screws being tightened different could make a difference.

Yeh I had the rifle apart but I have tried changing the tension on the screws wuit a bit because the abolts have a stupid tang design and I thought that might be the case. I had it apart quiet a few times while i was doing loads as I was working on the trigger as well and it was still shooting consistantly. I have cleaned it consistantly as well.

Stock or action

I found the problem with the rifle. If I shoot It on a sant bag without touching the stock it will shoot under .25 inch. If I allow it to hit my sholder under recoil It goes out to .75 or 1 inch. Would this be caused by something wrong with the stock or maybe something wrong with the action

I’m going to assume you are shooting a 223. Not a lot of kick so you can shoot the rifle without full contact to the butt. I'm going to go ahead and say that you might want to revaluate the way you shoulder the rifle. If the rifle is shooting better than when your shoulder is touching it, something is happening during recoil. A flinch or shouldering issues. Just my opinion.

Its a 223 wssm. The reason I think its a problem with the stock Is I can shoot other rifles including bigger calibers just as well holding them tight. If It is human error what should I do to try and fix this. I cant shoot it in the field without holding it

Something isn't right. I have a tough time believing that it's the rifle. Especially when is shoots better without you shouldering it. You need to shoot more and try different scenarios.

The recoil lug is glass bedded. Looks like a factory job. I will get a friend to shoot it next weekend who can shoot 590s in small bore and that should confirm if its my error or the rifles.

You have changed the harmonics of the rifle. Loosen the screws from the action and tightened the screws a little bit, shoot a group, check the group shot, let rifle cool a little, tightened screws a little more if group is not good, repeat process until you have the group you want. The wheeler fat wrench would be ideal for this, that way you know how many inches of torque is required for screws.

maybe shoot it from a lead sled or similar rest to take human error out of the equation?
