Hey guys,

I've wanted to go hog hunting for the past couple years, and it sounds like Texas and Oklahoma are the prime spots to go. It also look likes OK has some pretty expensive license fees, so if I can make the trip work, it would probably be in Texas.

I know you can book a hunt on a ranch, and I may very well end up doing that, but is there any public land or places where folks are so eager to get rid of pigs that I could shoot a couple?

Also, as long as I'm down there, what are the opportunities like for other types of hunting?

Thanks guys,
Chris

Public hunting in Tx is almost non existent. There are a few WMA's but you have to hunt them during daylight hours and they are HEAVILY hunted. If you want the best chance to get a hog hire a guide. They can run from a couple hundred to almost 1k depending on where you hunt. Usually they provide all the gear unless you have a favorite weapon. Many use night vision and thermal. Also they have lease they hunt which is private property and can be hunted at night. I hunted with a guide in east Tx called the dehogginator. We got a hog and had fun. I will be going back but will spend more time the next time. Probably 1.5 -2 weeks. Made a good friend there and will hunt with him again along with the guide and maybe someone else.

I will tell you it is very addictive. I had not hunted anything in probably 20 years. I have become obsessed with hog hunting. I cannot wait to go again. I only wish there were more places in Oregon I could hunt them. I will be hunting bear this year, the closest thing here to a hog.

Thanks BLDSMITH, good info. I'll definitely check him out. Was he cool with you carrying a sidearm?

Also, not sure if this changes anything, but I'd love to try taking a boar with my bow as well.

I did not carry as I did not want to mess with transporting on an airplane. My friend who set it all up did carry his as did Joe the guide. Joe does have a blind set but we did spot and stalk at night. A bit difficult with a bow but not impossible. If you set up a hunt ask him about it. He is ameanable to most ideas.

Awesome. I sent him a message on Facebook so i'm just waiting to hear back from him

I just went on a texas hog hunt march 3-5. It was a total blast! My oldest son took a nice boar with his bow. We brought 7 hogs home to be processed, and they are delicious.
Flintknapper has a sticky about hog hunting. He helped me know what to expect, and he was correct.
Good luck! and yes..it is very addictive.

I have to admit, I have a hard time wanting hogs to be eradicated. I know they are harming the ecology, and unchecked, they will destroy the deer habitat. That said, I love year round hunting. We drive the property at night and usually spotlight a few, we drive them up during the day, we are always, year round, hunting. When I was a kid, deer season was it, and we NEVER saw a pig. They were folklore, stories told by old-timer ranchers that seemed too far-fetched to be believed.

Now, I get as excited about shooting hogs as I do deer. Part of this is the lack of any decent trophy deer on our place, but mostly, it is just awesome always being on a hunt. Filling feeders? Hunting. Moving blinds? Hunting. Sitting by the fire? Hunting. I've killed hogs while doing all of these activities. It's glorious.

We even had a sounder walk up on us while testing a new battery in the feeder. I ran the test, and thirty seconds later, two big sows with piglets in tow make their way to the feeder pen with me and my son standing in it. My .30-30 was leaning against a tree outside the pen, so it took me a few seconds to get to it, but I still managed to get one before they evaporated into the brush.

Lord help me....I.....love them.

^^^^^^They say that feral hogs are becoming abundant in illinois. Even though I am a cash-grain farmer and wild hogs can only hurt my bottom line.......I will admit that I am more than a little excited about it!
Especially after a recent hog-hunt in Texas.....I'm hooked!

I'd rather eat a feral hog than a deer any day.
