Hi All,

I just did an inventory of my collection, and got to thinking what my next caliber should be.

I hunt all types of game with the largest being whitetail deer.
I tend to walk great distances when out in the field.

I will soon have a CPL, and intend to carry when possible.

I do not reload YET, but hope to start soon.

Given the below collection, what would be your recommendation for one rifle (any action) and one pistol (any type of platform).

RIFLES
Remington 870 16 Gauge Pump
Winchester 94 30-30 Lever
Marlin 60 22 LR Semi
Winchester 43 22 Hornet Bolt
Savage 93 17 HMR Bolt
Rossi Single Shot 22 LR/20 Gauge Break
Marlin 1984C 357 Magnum Lever

HANDGUNS
Ruger Sp101 357 Magnum DA Revolver
S & W 65-5 LS 357 Magnum DA Revolver

I've got more than a few ideas in mind so far, just looking from some input from the experts!

A high quality 30-06 / .270 bolt gun with a quality 3x9 scope.

A Colt .45ACP clone or a 9mm Browning High Power.

Either the .270 or 30-06 will handle basic bolt gun duties and prepare you for stepping up in power if you so desire.

Either the .45 or 9mm will provide a quality semi auto experience with a proven design. Once well versed in this type of pistol you can move on to others if so desired.

You are thinking along the correct lines to build up a battery of firearms to handle different shooting tasks.
Have fun

+1 to the semi auto handgun in 9mm or 45acp

i will suggest either a 12ga pump in remington 870 or mossberg 500
that or a bolt action in a full power chambering (30-06, 308, or almost any cartridge based off of those rounds will work)

As I'm a fan of both the .30-06 Sprg and .45ACP, I heartily concur with the recommendation for a bolt-action rifle in .30-06 and a .45ACP pistol. Preferably a pre-64 Winchester Mdl 70 for the former and a Colt 1911 for the latter.

These are proven calibers that have a wealth of reloading data together with a variety of bullets and powders to choose from. Especially the .30-06.

After that, get a Garand. :)

You seem to have several 22s if you wish to exapand your collection:
22 pistol Browning buckmark (4 or 6 inch barrel)
22 rifle CZ 542 or savage mark 2

non 22 guns:
pistol- the browning high power 9mm (or a clone like bersa thunder 9)
rifle- savage 308 or 30/06

hamourkiller nailed it.

You need a traditional bolt gun (I favor 30-06, but .270 would work fine) and a traditional semi-auto (I favor the nine, but a .45 would MORE than suffice).
