I need an inexpensive .223 for zapping varmints. Nothing fancy, just want something that works out to 250 yards or so. A minute of angle ought to do it.

My first impulse is a used Rem 700, Ruger 77 or Winchester 70. My second thought is a new Savage 110 with an accutrigger (a used one would be even better, but they are very hard to find).

But maybe there is a cheap single-shot that actually works well enough? (My impression of the break-open handirifles is that they are not varmint-accurate... can they be made to behave, or is this a terminal problem?) Maybe a nice import I'd otherwise overlook? Any other thoughts?

The Syracuse gun show is coming soon, and I need to know what to hunt for. Thanks!

I got a Savage Model 12FVXP at Dicks Sporting Goods to use for the exact same purpose. They aren't extremely expensive and they have a great trigger and excellent accuracy. The FVXP models come in a black synthetic with a scope already mounted. Not a bad way to go IMO

I am by far no expert and I am not a hunter but if it were me based on my exp. I would probably looking into the following.

Savage with accu-Trigger I think it is the 12VXP or something.
A CZ model with the set trigger.
Winchester Model 70
Remington 700 series

In that order.

Chris

Are the Handi Rifles accurate enough for varmint work? Any experience with them?

I shot the Savage .223 this weekend. Nice little rifle and great accuracy. We did sub-MOA 5rd groups at 100yds and then took it out to 400yds to plink steel.
