Help me decide - Sig P239 or P228

Click HERE for lots of great side by side pics.

You can't go wrong with either, but I would go with a P225 for your purposes.

Just another person chiming in for the P239. Fits my hand like a glove, and is easy to carry.

P.S. I won't show it this thread. It might have it's feelings hurt. ;)

Cslinger- is the two-tone pistol second to the left a 229? I noticed that it has an external extractor as opposed to the internal on the 228. Has it affected functioning at all? Also, the slide on the 228 looks narrower- it seems to lack that rib that the 229(?) has through the slide serrations. Is it, or is that just an optical illusion? Thanks!

Nate

From top to bottom.
SIG P220ST .45
SIG P229TT .40
SIG P225 9x19mm
SIG P239 .40

I have never had a problem with any SIGs as far as functioning internal or external extractors. That particular P229 like all of the SIGs pictured has never had a malfunction of anykind except that depressing state when all the ammo runs out at the range. :( :D

I hope this isn't too far off topic: are holsters that you could use for the 229 compatible with the 228?

I saw a 228 today that was pre-owned with nite sites for $500. :D I'm thinkin' about it. :)

Holsters should work for both. Actually I have found most holsters designed around SIGs work pretty well with most other SIGs. The P228 might be a hair thinner in the slide than the P229 but not by much.

This is one of those decisions that won't be decided on the specs. From reading, I find that the 239 is a single stack 229. But for what should be very similar guns, they feel disproportionately different to me. I've shot both, and have come to the conclusion that they are better treated as guns in different classes, rather than different sized guns in the same family.

I still may get a 239, but I'm not as impressed by it as the 229.

What SIG really needs is a 232DAK in 9mm.

I have the P228 and the P239 in 9mm. I am more accurate with the P239 because I can get more hand around it, but the ergonomics of the slide release leave something to be desired. The P239's slide release is recessed and tight, making it a real pain to drop the slide that way. There's just not enough lever to get a thumb on. The P228, however, has a normal slide release that is easy to hit. Before you say that I should drop the slide by pulling back on it with my support hand, I feel that my support hand should be moving back around the firing hand after I load instead of reaching up and over when my firing thumb can do the job just fine. I have started practicing doing that with the P239 because of the ergonomics, but it still does not feel natural yet. The P239 is way easier for me to conceal in an IWB, but the P228 does just fine in a SmartCarry under a pair of baggy shorts. So if concealability is your biggest factor, go with the P239. Otherwise, go with whichever one fits you best.

I have one of the extended 10-round magazines for the P239. It doesn't make the grip feel any better, unlike the extended P245 mag.

In my opinion all Sigs are excellent weapons. I have a p239 in 9mm para, it is absolutely perfect for me, it conceals well, fits my hands like a glove and I can achieve a very high level of accuracy. However I have relatively small hands and I find it hard to conceal anything bigger than a p239 underneath clothes from Abercrombie, but thats just me I would expect that someone larger than me might hate the p239 and be able to carry and use something like the p228 much more effectively.

Anybody find it odd to go this many posts with no one coming to the 239s defense?

I am late to the party indeed....I love my P239- 9m...Fits my average to small hands well, holds 8+1 rounds of Gold Dots and weighs in at 25.2 0z ...it is more accurate than I am and serves the purpose for which I bought...It is indeed an excellent CCW weapon...To be totally honest, I recently bought a S&W 1911SC and like it as well...I am still searching for that perfect Carry Piece....and the journey is a pleasant one....Oh well, guns and opinions have something in common...They are all different, neither totally right or wrong....just my 2 cents

I'm with Safety First on this one. IMHO, there aren't many other guns more perfect than the Sig 239 in 9mm.

Now, with that said, I'm in the process of trying to sell my 239 at the moment. It was a difficult decision, but there is a very basic philosophy for my reasoning. The old saying "Be careful of the man with one gun......." has special meaning to me. If I plan on covering my tail with a handgun, I prefer not to have any distractions. I've decided to move to a 1911 .45 platform, but if I keep the Sig, I know I won't maintain the proficiency that I would like. I've been down this road before. Owning 30+ handguns is fun, but it sure as hell don't make you a better shot. I'm down to six.

If the 239 is what you're considering, stop thinking. Hand over the cash and take home the Sig's little 9mm. (And buy it some Hogues!)

I recently bought a Sig 239 .40 S&W (It was a bar coded DHS/ICE model) for CCW and must say that I have been extremely happy with it. At the range it is dead on accurate and has very manageable recoil. I live in Florida where most of year its shorts and t-shirt weather. For this reason I prefer a good single stack. In addition to my Sig I have an HK USP, a 1911, and .45 AMT backup (plus a couple .22 pistols not suitable for carry). The HK can be very bulky but I don’t mind it if it is cold enough to wear a jacket. During the rest of the year I was confined to my 1911 or AMT. The small size of the AMT was a plus but its weight, stiffer recoil, heavier trigger pull, and poor sites made it a poor primary CCW. The Sig 239 is just slightly bigger than the AMT, also a single stack, very accurate night sights and very manageable recoil.
