I have been looking for a 20" upper in 5.56 nato for some time now. I want it to have a chrome-lined chamber and barrel. Also, I would like it in government or pencil barrel profile. I'm open to rifle kits also, I just don't need the lower. A fixed stock doesn't scare me. I have found some but when I go to order, the upper I want is out of stock. I also do not want to spend $2000 on an upper( sorry noveske, wilson combat, and les baer). I just can't seem to find one, is the 2012 election causing this? I just can't justify spending more than $450 to $650 on an upper. Anyways, if someone can point me to a reputable site that has one right now would be great. As always, thanks for all the help.

It seems that 20" uppers are not all the rage, and those of us that like real RIFLES :D instead of carbines have to deal with supply and demand lol

did you try del ton?...im looking at them for an upper for high power type shooting (appleseed instructor)

I know the feeling. It took me nearly half a year of poking around before fate dropped a 20" ArmaLite into my lap.

I would say Del-Ton is your best bet if you want a relatively cheap, but decent government profile upper (if they're in stock that is).

You might try Model "1" Sales out of Whitewright Texas there phone is 903-546-2087. I've bought several uppers as well as other parts from them with no problem at all and they are very willing to help.

I just got a 20" upper from Palmetto State Armory. It doesn't have anything special, front sight post and regular handguards.

I haven't had time to put my lower together yet, but the fit and finish looks great and their customer service was superb!

Plus 1 here too, if youre looking for a 1 in 7 barrel they have it and chrome lined. They are awesome to deal with as well

BCM, Palmetto (PSA), and CMMG make a 20" rifle upper with A2 barrel profile. Bushmaster has occasionally made them in the past as well. That could be the complete list. Order of quality would be:
BCM
PSA
CMMG/BM tied

PSA occasionally has in stock a cool one that has the A2 profile with a hammer forged barrel. They also carry a regular one. I would go BCM for overall best quality, or PSA with the CHF barrel for the coolest one, or PSA with the regular barrel for best value.

20 inch, chrome lined, 1:7 flat-top is my favorite all-rounder. In a pinch barring a Colt based upon availability, the next place I'd try is RRA then Armalite. Hard to believe they or one of their distributors doesn't have one.

I think RRA and ArmaLite only do heavy barrels. OP wants government profile.

I guess that's new on their part. I only have A-2 profile from both but haven't bought one in several years.

I like BCMs 20" uppers. I prefer their Gov profile that accepts regular plastic handguards. Mine won't shoot little groups like a RRA HBAR, but they are much nicer to carry.

Lotta love for a 20" AR.

Palmetto State, Del Ton, and Model 1 all carry inexpensive 20" kits.

If you would like to have a super accurate 20" rifle without a lot of expense and hassle, the ER Shaw Stainless Steel heavy barrel from Model 1 is a real steal.

Build it yourself? If everyone is out of complete 20" options, put one together yourself. Takes a couple bucks worth of tools, but then you have the ability to change whatever at will in the future. I'd search around the EE on ar15 as well and find some lightly used parts there too. You should be able to have a decent barrel and bolt while being out the door in your price range if you build it yourself.

I would build myself if i wanted a rifle for plinking, SHTF, etc. If i wanted a NM or a good precision rifle i would get a WOA (White Oak Armory). In between those, any good 20" would be great; PSA, Armalite, RRA.

Edit: If i weren't going to carry it alot (duty, etc), i would get a HBAR or medium profile barrel. They shoot better after getting hot, the extra wieght is nice for recoil and such.

check JSE Surplus. I just bought my upper from them and had no issues. I have put a few hundred rounds downrange w/o issue. Took me two to three weeks to get mine, but I went custom and had parts added so I knew that gong in.

If I were in your position, I'd probably go with this:

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/complete-uppers/20/psa-20-5-56-1-7-cmv-chrome-lined-mp-hpt-upper.html

$480 with a BCG and charging handle, plus it's an A2 "Government" profile.

I recently picked up a 6.8 SPC II PSA upper w/hammer forged barrel. While I originally recieved an incorrect upper, the mixup was rectified easily enough, and PSA got me a return shipping label and the right upper post haste. PSA uppers have a good reputation, and I would not hesitate to go with another one for my next build.

Just lookin' through my RRA catalog at the shop, I was very surprised to note that a proper A-2 profiled 20" is in fact not offered. Funny, from a company that likes to play the issue rifle association word games.

This led me to note the weight differences of a stripped iron sight "H-BAR" and a correct A-2 iron sighted barrel on the bench. The difference, and my appreciation of the A-2's performance may be leading to some lathe time in the future if everyone else has pulled the plug on the profile as well.

I just can't justify spending more than $450 to $650 on an upper.

PSA is decent quality, but my friend, who owns 3 of them, occasionally experiences malfunctions.

Buy this, within your price range, for 100% reliability:
