I have been having a real hard time buying my first gun. I am looking for a .40 cal semi-auto. I have looked at a lot of guns, H&ks, Glocks, Sigs, S&Ws, Springfields. Some I like better than others but price is a big issue with me. I really like the Springfield XD and the price right, but Springfield doesn't have any availible right now with a factory fired shell casing. By the way I live in Maryland so that makes it even harder. I found a few S&W TSW's at CDNN that are in my price range and was wondering if any has had any experience with them. They have a new 4043TSW for $389, and a used 4043TSW for $279. My budget is $500. My dealer charges $50 for a FFL transfer, and $30 for a trigger lock that Maryland requires on all guns made after 2001. So that $80 needs to be included in my $500 budget.

Thanks for the help.

A Kahr K40 sounds like it would be a good choice.

I picked one out for a friend recently and it was reasonably priced and a very nice gun. It also came with the fired case etc...

More questions...

My dealer charges $50 for a FFL transfer, and $30 for a trigger lock that Maryland requires on all guns made after 2001.

Well, $50 is too high, and Trigger locks arn't an 'ad item' on most handguns. They have to be built in, so I'm not sure what he means by that.

I would recommend finding another FFL, or shopping around at local shows for a good condition used Beretta, Sig, XD, or something.

Good handguns are getting a premium price here now, so shop carefully, and be prepared to buy it once you find it.

My dealer has trigger locks that he installs the meet the Maryland requirements. he can install them on most guns. All the gun shops around my area charge anywhere from $45 to $65 which I now is alot.

Time to move .. but seriously what trigger lock can the gunsmith install for that much?

Only trigger locks ive seen that you install are the 5-10$ ones you use a key on to install and remove. Just wondering as ive never heard this before

UkraineTrain, is the CZ-40B the same as the CZ-75B in .40 cal? Specifically, will the .22LR Kadet conversion kit fit the pistol (I see the "CZ-40s&w" on p. 12 of CDNN's catalog 2003-5)? Mustang, if it's a first pistol, a .22 of some sort will make for a lot of fun, inexpensive practice. Lots of folks report that they're delighted with their CZs. Do they sell CZs in Maryland?

I'm not saying not to get a .40 if that's what you want; I'm saying that I expect that you'll want a .22 pretty soon.

What are your primary goals? Self-defense at home, concealed carry as a regular citizen, target shooting, IPSC or IDPA competition, Law Enforcement Officer off-duty carry? Are you learning to shoot, or are you an experienced shooter and first-time gun buyer?

I'm afraid that I've shot an S&W auto only once, on a range trip. I can't help with any advice on that line, other than to say that it was in .45ACP and that it went "bang" each time I pulled the trigger.

Welcome to The High Road! :)

Mustang,

Look at the CZ-75. Its got a nice grip angle. Reliable and solid. And the price should be in your market. I advise against a S&W auto though, personal prefference, but no one I know likes their grip angle (lots of recoil)

Good Luck,

Jarrod

I'll second the above comment on S&W automatics. My first carry pistol was an HK USP Compact .40. I loved it, and only sold it to fund my purchase of an HK USP Tactical.

Getting one for $420 before gun lock and transfer fee might be tricky. I don't know how they're priced in your area, but I sold my used USP for $525 with NIB Trijicon sights and a pretty new Don Hume (I think...) IWB holster.

Even if you have to save another month or two, I highly recommend Heckler & Koch pistols. And just to avoid accusations of being hypocritical...

I now carry a Colt 1991, and it's my best friend. I'm a small guy, so the grip fits my hands well, and with a DeSantis IWB holster it's very concealable (even with my frame.)

I am not that familiar with your laws but...
CDNN has the Steyr M9 & M40 instock for under $300.00.
These guns have a integrated key locking system which may fit your needs.
I dont know if they are available with a "Fired Case" but you could give them a call. To see the list of available guns you must down load there sales catalog and look on page 8.
You can also buy the gun from them with your credit card and have it shipped to your dealer provided he has his FFL on file with them.

Mustang, guns made before Dec. 31, 2002 has to have a lock added for a sale. Guns made after Dec 31, 2002 has to have a built in lock for to be sold in Md. New guns are required to have the factory fired case before a dealer can import one into the state.
