$500 at the very maximum please, and the cheaper, the better ($300 or less is what I would prefer.)

My dad owns a quite a few guns, but I've finally decided I wanted to go and buy my own (this would be my first). Whenever we go plinking, I usually use the Ruger 10/22 that he bought when I was little. It gets the job done, but I'm a 17 year old male, so I want something more exciting.

Handgun or rifle is fine, I just want something that will look awesome that can shoot .22 LR ammo (because that seems to be the cheapest/easiest to obtain for my circumstances).

I just don't want to get something really terrible (in terms of quality), and I'd like my dad to be impressed with what I chose. I've been looking at some Ruger revolvers, because they are the first thing I thought of when I thought, "I want an "AWESOME" gun I can plink with."

The plinking is all done on my property (because I live in a very rural area) if that makes any difference (which I don't think it does).

Thanks for understanding my firearm ignorance :D

802:...I'm a 17 year old...

Federal law prohibits licensed dealers from selling you rifles and shotguns until you turn eighteen, handguns and other firearms until you turn twenty one.

Same age restriction goes for ammunition sales as well.

Go to www.rimfirecentral.com there are quite a few mods you can do to that 10/22 that will make it look "badass".

If you want to buy your own rifle you will have to be 18 unless you do a private transaction from an individual. (Check your local and state laws, not sure where you are and I don't know everything... surprising I know.)

With that out of the way, maybe look at a S&W M&P 15-22, it may be towards the top of your budget but it is very fun to shoot. A Ruger MK series pistol also sounds about right but you would have a longer wait if you want to buy it. (Again, check the laws yourself, I don't want to get you in trouble.)

Always glad to see enthusiastic young shooters, welcome to THR!

The Tec-22 is real fun gun (if you can find one). Fun to shoot, use ordinary Ruger-type mags, and they're surprisingly accurate. I paid $40 for mine, but that was a special case.
They look like this (stock photo).

If you really feel the need, there is all sorts of tactical-looking crap with rails and spikes that you can tart up that 10/22 with. Those things have more of an aftermarket than probably every other .22 ever made, combined. They make a stock that turns the thing into a friggin' MG42, for the love of gawd.

Anyway, you're probably going to get some flak for the way you phrased your post - I imagine a lot of people will be telling you you have your priorities confused - but either way, we need a definition of what you consider "badass" before we can really help you, eh? :)

Russ said something the mods didn't like. Something about a 22LR is not bad___ as posted by the OP.

I'd like my dad to be impressed with what I chose.
Just keep in mind that what will impress him might not fit with your desire for something cool looking.
Personally, I'd be most impressed if my son picked out something like this:

Or this:

But if you want badass (looks, anyway) there's this for less than $300

Or the ultimate, S&W M&P 15-22.

Just remember shooting is supposed to be fun. You have the rest of your life for your tastes to evolve into the things the old (and experienced) farts like.

With all legal aspects satisfied, I would recommend the Smith and Wesson 22A. Only because I have one and have put 700 plus rounds through it with no problems. Only set me back $249.

Like Russ said, and 22lr do not go together. You need to be more mature about firearms. We who love guns already have to fight with the stigma of negativity because of attitudes such as yours. Any way in the interest of keeping your desire for firearms you already have a nice one in a ruger 10/22. This rifle can easily be converted to something unique that you may like or may be more your style by simply changing the stock or barrels which are in abundant. For less than $200 you can purchase a bull barrel and for less than a $100 dollars a hogue stock. You can spend more on a stock and get all kinds of stuff you may like. Go to rimfire central . com and learn more.

Here is an example of what your ruger 10/22 can look like if you want to go tactical.

This place will a stock you may like:

Good luck in impressing your father, think it out well and chose wisely.

No offense ms6852 but I don't think you should be so quick to judge. You don't know what he means by "awesome" and just because he is seventeen doesn't mean it is something from CoD. Even if it is it doesn't mean he wouldn't be mature and responsible when it comes to firearm safety.

I just don't want to get something really terrible (in terms of quality), and I'd like my dad to be impressed with what I chose. I've been looking at some Ruger revolvers, because they are the first thing I thought of when I thought, "I want a bad ass gun I can plink with."

Sounds like to me this kid just wants to impress his father by coming up with a gun on his own that he and his father can go plinking with. Who doesn't want to impress their father especially at that age.

All I'm trying to say is that sometimes we all are a little to quick to judge based on prior experiences when maybe we should ask what his opinion of "awesome" is first. He might shock you and say "something that the Duke carried". It could happen:D

Shawn

By the way I just found this but have no clue about its durability nor reliability.

well, you already have as "badass" a 22 carbine as there is
(as said, limitless aftermarket trick-outs for those inspired by such things)
whether or not dad will be impressed, I dunno

if "cool factor" is what tinkles your windchimes, you might just want to browse some 22 pistols... just in case dad is not as inspired as yourself by "cool", some are, some not
quite a few pistolas these days do seem to lean more on cool factor than onperformance, but any will do for plinking fun

take a closer look at what Dad likes best for himself, since it do sound like you will require some co-operation for any firearms purchase
if he is an AR/AK guy, he just might be real enthusiastic about tacticool, too, nothing wrong with that, do your thing (safely)

I would have to agree to a certain extent but if you took a Ruger 10/22 and put on a Boyds thumbhole stock, a 3x9 Leupold II, and a new bull barrel you would be right at the $500 mark and would have a fun plinkster on your hands.

You can trick out that Ruger 10/22 to make it look just like an AR 15. There's a great book out in the market that shows all the different upgrades you can do on these guns (available on Amazon). A lot of things you can do don't even require a gunsmith. Be careful though, it's an addiction once you get started!

The nice part about it is, you can accurize the heck out of this gun and still be able to go out and shoot it a lot because .22 ammo is cheaper than anything else.

Smith & Wesson MP 15-22, Magpul MOE Edition. Davidson's Gallery of Guns $461, shipped, spare 25 round mags, $14.

Buy it. Then come back & post pics and tell us how thankful you are for the advice
