I suppose I have some rephrasing to do.

When I said, erh, "awesome" (language filter swapped word out), I didn't mean some massive MG covered with spikes that belongs on a helicopter. I more or else meant a just something that wasn't, well, to put it bluntly, lame. I consider my great grandfather's Walther P38 to be pretty "awesome."

And I'm fully aware that any gun that only shoots .22 LR as its caliber of bullet isn't going to be "awesome" compared to a lot of other guns; I was using the term relatively speaking.

Last thing I want to add real quick is that even if I might come across as some gung-ho teenager that is completely ignorant and wants a massive gun for the sake of it, I'm not. I might have just used poor wording, but I'm trying to make an educated decision in my first true gun, and apologize for sounding so immature to say the least. I just don't have much interest in owning a really plain rifle, which is why I put so much emphasis on it being an "awesome" gun.

I'm at school and I don't have time to proofread this, so sorry for any typos!

If you think you might want to get into AR15 style rifles later, you could consider a S&W M&P15-22, Colt M4 22, or even a Sig P552. AR15 style 22s offer a lot of customization options for future upgrades.

You might also consider the GSG-5 series of 22s (both pistols and rifles) that resemble the HKMP5. These are offered in both pistol and rifle configurations and would also be fun plinkers.

As for Semi-auto .22 cal pistols, if you can find one, I highly recommend the Sig Trailside. The Sig Trailside was made for Sig by Hammerli, which is a Swiss company that makes custom Olympic shooters. These offer amazing accuracy for under $500.

have you considered a .22 lever action? I got a Henry .22 a few months ago and love it, it's my first gun and seems to me to be extremely accurate... and who didn't want to be a cowboy when they were younger?? :D

802 I understand exactly where your coming from... some guys forget the way it used to be when they were young

to answer your question truely look into a Ruger 10/22 they are under $300 and can be changed in about a million ways
you can turn it into a M16 look alike an AK-47 look alike a STG look alike a sniper rifle or just about anything else you want to

i really do suggest www.rimfirecentral.com because you will learn alot about what can be done to the 10/22 and a good deal about other .22s

remember "only accurate rifles are interesting" so once you get whatever you get practice alot believe me my dad was impressed when i started to really shoot well no matter what i shot (he hated AR15s till i shot one well)

"awesome" is a suggestive term but what i think is "awesome" and hopefuly you do too is the Ruger 10/22 decked out with a hogue overmolded stock and a bull barrel a nice scope and a whole lot of plinking cans bottles and little green army men at 50 yards yea i shoot groups with it and play at the range just to see how far out i can hit stuff but plinking to me is the best way to shoot

here is a few 10/22s that have been changed (the short barrel is an NFA item and must be legal in your area and tax stamped as a short barrel rifle) but all of these can be built by you without having to know alot about guns

S&W has also begun marketing the M&P 15-22P. It's a M&P 15-22 pistol. It looks to be as much fun as the rifle.

Awesome =

I'd like to thank everyone that has helped me out in this thread, I've taken everyone's advice into consideration, and..... I'm still thinking about what I should choose.

While I continue to consider my options, I was wondering where I should go about purchasing the firearm I select? As a teenager, I generally assume anything that I want to purchase I can just get off the internet, because that's where I will find the lowest price and it is the most convenient option for me. It might sound stupid, but having never purchased a gun, no less online, I'm not sure if that would be the best option. If it is, where would I go about doing it?

I would check with some reputable online dealers (budsgunshop or impactguns) and make a note of their prices. Then I'd check with your local gun store and see if they can match, beat, or get close to the price of the gun shipped. If so then I'd always prefer to buy local. I've had pretty good luck with this but did have to buy my Smith and Wesson M&P15T online due to the $400 savings.

Rather have a Bolt Gun?

If you don't like the thought of an AR style gun and lean towards the more traditional types check out the CZ452 or 453. Gorgeous finish, well designed stock and a nice trigger. Top it off with a decent scope and you can own a "Awesome" bolt gun. I've had a 452 in 17 mach2 and one in 22 mag. Both shot extremely well.

If you purchase online consider the price of the weapon + shipping costs + insurance costs + FFL transfers fees and sometimes the savings you thought you were getting disappear. So sometimes buy from a local shop is cheaper....GOOD LUCK!! BTW as a minor you will not be able to buy it personally but maybe Uncle Buck or Cousin Jake can.

you want awesome……you want quality….. You want dad to be unbelievably impressed…. Then settle for nothing less than a S&W model 45 .22 caliber revolver. It will exceed expectations in all categories.

as stated before your being under the age of 18 you cannot purchase anything yet
you will either have to wait untill your 18 or check your local laws to see if a parent is legaly allowed to purchase a firearm (usualy only long guns) for you

heres the deal about purchasing a firearm
no matter where you go you will have to do a background check so its not like ordering a CD online it wont come to you it will go to a FFL holder (gun shop) of your choice (you must get the permission of the shop first)
your going to have to see someone face to face to have this check done EVERYTIME you buy a firearm
there are many places to order a firearm online and have it sent to a local FFL holding shop but you will have to have it sent to that shop and they will run a NICS check and local law enforcement (state level) background check before you can have your new gun
same goes for just going to a gun store
your best bet before you get to amped about your first gun would be to check the phone book and find gun shops in your area
go talk to the people behind the counter
ask good questions like "what is your price for an FFL transfer?" "what is your price for {model name here} new?" "do you have {model name here} in stock?" sometimes it works out to just browse for a little while first.

once you have that bit of information check the internet for prices
www.budsgunshop.com
www.impactguns.com
and im sure others here know better places

then i would figure out what the cost of the firearm+shipping+the FFL transfer fee+background check (some shops charge if doing a FFL transfer) is

sometimes its cheaper than just getting one off the shelf sometimes its cheaper than ordering from that dealer and sometimes its niether and thats when you know what you should do

dont be afraid to walk in and ask questions if they want to sell guns they will talk to you if you feel like they are rude just leave and if you feel like they dont know what they are talking about leave and come ask here

SIG 522. Got mine at a gun show for $300 + tax add a cheap red dot and some spare Blackdog mags, maybe even their 50 round drum and you are in for some serious .22lr fun!

As others have said, check your local laws first on whether or not a parent can legally buy the firearm for you or if you will have to wait until you are 18.

Assuming everything is A-OK legally and you wish to purchase online you will need to have the firearm sent to a licensed gun dealer (FFL). Your local FFL will then run the necessary background checks, etc. as well as charge you for his services. Make sure you shop around, as some FFLs really must hate doing online transfers as their rates are ridiculous (my nearest FFL charges $75 for the transfer, so I end up driving 30 minutes to another FFL who does it for $20). Try this link for help finding the cheapest FFL:

On that note, a lever gun might be kind of cool. I don't have one but its definitely on the short list. I'd probably get the Marlin 39.

He is not able to buy any guns on his own yet, but they may be gifted to him by his parents.

(B14) May a parent or guardian
purchase firearms or ammunition
as a gift for a juvenile (less than 18
years of age)?
Yes. However, possession of
handguns by juveniles (less than 18
years of age) is generally unlawful.
Juveniles generally may only receive
and possess handguns with the written
permission of a parent or guardian
for limited purposes, e.g., employment,
ranching, farming, target practice
or hunting.

I'm 17 aswell and Just own two bolt guns and a Hi Power (don't like polypistols). Nothing tacticool (yet :D) but then again I am from newer generation and typically because of movies and video games, this kind of gun is gaining alot of popularity. The days of blued steel and fine wooden stocks starting to phase out for these reasons. It is unfortunate though considering the craftsmenship put into these firearms. While I do plan on getting a polymer framed pistol sometime in my future, I prefer handguns that are all steel.

There's nothing wrong with tacticool, as long as it's not pure junk.

I've been shooting my built up .223 AR15 for awhile, I bought a MP15/22 and can't believe how much fun I have shooting it.

I figured I'd be bored with it by now but I'm not. Btw, I owned a GSG5 for about two years. I hated it.

I bought a cheap Walther PS22 red dot and plink all day with this thing.

I think one of the CZ 22 rifles previously mentioned would be as sweet a 22 as one can get for a reasonable price. You can go over to rimfirecentral as previously suggested and see many ways to spend a lot of money fixing up 10/22's but that takes time and more money than the end result may be worth. Fixing up 10/22's is fun but seldom inexpensive.

There's a gorgeous Anschutz (sp?) Woodchucker listed for around $500 on one of the forums I'm on, I'll edit when I find the link. *Edit: Nevermind, it's no longer available...

Since you can't legally purchase a firearm of any sort from an FFL yet you might as well forget the internet or gun shops.

You could start looking at shops and put something on lay away until you turn 18. That way you could enjoy the hunt for just the right first firearm.

Alternately, you could start looking for antique/curio shops for a vintage firearm that is of interest. Again, when you turn 18 you could make the purchase.

Since you've not described any areas of interest there's not much hope of helping you beyond the 30,000 ft. observation level. Interested in cowboy action shooting? Roaring '20s gangster period? Modern military history? Anything?
