Help me pick a rifle

I will definitely check out the CZ550. I've always heard good things about it. I looked at the Kimber Montana when I first started this process, but I could never seem to find one for under $1000. $1000 is my ceiling. Any higher and I'll be cutting into my scope money. Not a good idea imo.

I really thought I would hear more from Tikka nation. Maybe someone should post something negative about a tikka, or something positive about Chuck Hawks lol.

i'm probably beating a dead horse but if it was my money i'd own a Vanguard sub-moa in stainless. unless you're a lefty.

Muleskinner,
The other two posts recommending the Weatherby are worth re-considering. They have matte blue, synthetic stocked models that will take a beating. I have a 7mm Wby Mark V with matte blue finish. I restocked it with an HS Precision monte carlo style stock with the LOP shortened to make it fit me better.

I have used it on several grueling elk hunts in Colorado, getting some scratches and dings along the way. You know, those scratches and dings are just "character marks" that prove it is a tool, not a museum piece. To me, the gun looks great with those marks on it. But, like you said, who cares how it looks as long as it shoots great. Mine does. It is totally dependable, and closing the bolt on it is like closing a bank vault door. It will never be sold. My son will get it after I am too old or too rickety to shoot anymore, which hopefully will be a long time from now.

Over 40 years I had my fair share of 30 cal center fire rifles. And the one that comes to my mind for portability, great hunting accuracy to 400 yards, durable, my choice today. One you never read about and most likely don't even know exists. Just one neat, shoot'n machine is!!!

....I tell you at the end....

During 1966-1969 my weapon was either the M14/E2, machine gun or the M-60. This was my first exposure to the 308.

My first rifle civilian rifle was a Rem 760/308 and I wacked a few Deer at 200, 230 yards with ease.

But after reading oodles of gun mags I got magnum stars.

Through out the last 40 yrs of Deer Hunting 98 per cent of the Deer I shot were NOT at magnum range!
200 yards or less.

About 6yrs ago I had a Rem R5, stainlss Mil-Spec, bolt action 308.

It shot into a quarter and less at 200yrds...very accurate but it cost me $920.....

One day in an auction I found a 'really cool' looking 308. I bought it. $300 less than my Mil-Spec stainlss.

I took them to the range. At 200 yards I could not tell the difference in the group. Sure the 700 might have been a smidgen better for my purpose and the hunting ranges I'd be shooting at. The 700 was not a $300 better shooter than my.....

I'll tell you at the end....

Well I sold the Mil Spec and I bought enuff 308 ammo that I don't have to buy store ammo for the next decade.

I'm not sure the rifle is even a yard long, it's probably longer but not much with a 16" barrel! It has Rem's special recoil pad and shooting it, is like firing a .410.

It's Black like a NinJa. Has Ghost-ring sights but I put a 4x Redfield on it.

It is a Remington 7600 P

==========================

I challenge any one here to a shoot, at 300 yards. Bring your $1,000 Weatherby, CZ, 700, Winchester, Sako.....

I'll bring my factory stock 7600P and 40 yrs of shooting a 308 to the table...

I have a Tikka T3 Hunter in .308 Win. It is an outstandingly accurate rifle and has taken its share of game. I highly recommend one, I did, however change the recoil pad out for a Limbsaver so my son can shoot it more comfortably. He killed a few deer last season, I have to pry it out of his hands. I also have a Tikka T3 Hunter in 7mm Rem Mag, once again, outstandingly accurate (MOA) and nice trigger. I highly recommend the Tikka's. The only down side for me is the magazines, which I don't consider that big of a deal for the overall performance of the rifle and the cost.

I have two Sakos which I would put up against any other weapon. These rifles shoot better than any human. I also have a Tikka T3 22-250..same thing. If you want a sculpture, put in a glass box, if you want a tool that is accurate and will do the job x 10, get a Sako or Tikka. Contrary to popular opinion, they are beautiful tools, just without the flowers..do we realy need flowers in shooting?

Do you want nice wood or synthetic?

I'd also consider the Remington Model 7 CDL for a wood stock. Remington 700 XCR for synthetic. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_XCR_specs.asp

Personally, I'd drop the Tikka - too much plastic, esp. at the price range you're considering. :( Sako I'd keep under consideration.

How about a Browning A-bolt or even the new X-bolt. Or a new Winchester Model 70 in .308.

Or, you can save for another month or two and get the Kimber Montana!

Personally, I'd probably get either the Model 7 CDL, X-bolt or save for the Kimber Montana!

Do you want nice wood or synthetic

I'm building an all weather rifle. Synthetic, stainless, dependable, moa out of the box. That whittles down the field considerably. The T3 Varmint in Stainless, the T/C Icon weathershield, and the Sako A7 all meet this criteria for under $1000. I'm also looking hard at every rifle suggested in this thread. I've got to be honest though, I'm probably not going to buy a Savage, or a Remington. I have offers come by me all the time to buy these rifles for a little bit of nothing, so I can't see going out and buying a brand new one. That said, I have looked at every gun suggested (even the remmy's and the savages), and am keeping an open mind. You guys know what you're talking about.

I'm taking a hard look at the Weatherby Vangaurd Sub moa, the Kimber Montana, and the CZ 550's at you guy's requests. All exceptional rifles, as are the rest of the recommended guns in this thread. How about the one Ghengisconrad suggests? I can see my hunting buddies now when I pull that thing out of the truck.

Thanks, Muleskinner

hey there,
im no expert but i also am lookin for a new rifle in .308. im leaning towards a remington 700 xcr tactical. they come with 20" and a 26" in barrell. and they are right at a grand. the cz550 kevlar is somethin else ive been checkin in too. the remington has a few more options i think. for that money i want a floating barrel, full bedding block, adjustable trigger. loos like a tough rifle. also has rem trinyte finish which is suposd to be weather and scratch proof. food for thought.

Model 7

If you have the chance check out Remington's model 7 in .308... Mine is an absolute tack driver...100-200 yards and that's pretty much the limit for deer in NOVA.

If you are looking to reach out 400-700 yards, alla Montana, or Wyoming hunting.. maybe something different, so it does depend on what and where you are shooting.
KKKKFL

Well guys, I finally decided on a rifle. And it's not one from my original 3. Let me tell you why I decided against them and which rifle I'm going to buy.

Tikka- I still love the Tikka T3. The action is as slick as anything I've ever handled, but I can't get past the plastic. If it were just the mag I could maybe look past it, but the trigger gaurd and the bolt shroud too! Too much.

Sako A7- I'm going to wait and buy a "good" Sako when I can afford it.

TC Icons- I'm seeing mixed reviews on this gun. I like it, but I'm going to wait until it's been out a while and see what people say about it after extensive use.

So I decided on the CZ 550 American. I know, I know! I said I wanted an all weather rifle, and the CZ is wood, and blued. I've got it covered man. I talked the wife into letting me buy two guns, so I'm going to get a marlin 336ss for rainy days. Thutty-thutty open sights.... classic. What do you think?
