So, I'm stuck between surplus Bulgarian wood and K-Var Plum for an AK. The surplus wood is $25 but needs a bit of work to look nice. The K-Var plum set is $100-ish and counts as 922r parts.

An additional related question: are the K-Var stock sets really worth the relatively high cost?

The AK is currently wearing fugly Century black plastic.

surplus wood can be sanded and refinished and it can look pretty nice, but if its going to cause compliance problems than it probably wouldnt be a good idea

What kinda AK you got? I actually found the 7.62 AK recoil to not be the most comfortable w/the K-Var stock, mainly because of the somewhat sharp area of the stock comb. YMMV. Kinda rubbed against my cheekbone wrong.
