I have a pretty low price range. This will be for occasional weekend shooting, but I do like semi-long-range shooting.

I see both a DPMS Oracle in 5.56 or a S&W Model M&P15 Carbine. Either would be $699. The DPMS is local, available today (not a huge deal...Illinois WINTER). The S&W may take a few weeks. I can handle that.

Price is close. DPMS has a case and extra mag, but adds tax. S&W ships free, but $25 shipping. So, price is not much of a factor.

Advice? They look almost identical.
THanks!

I recently purchased a S&W MP15 and couldn't be happier. I have no experience for DPMS but from what I can tell from reading countless forum threads here and on M4Carbine is that they are of lower quality than S&W.

I recently got a Doublestar Carbine off of budsgunshop.com for right around $700. It is a great shooter and much more accurate than I imagined (shooting quarters at 85 yds off of a four-wheeler seat). Don't mean to add another choice to your lineup, but this is my budget AR that I am more than pleased with.

Shipping takes about 3 days from Bud's btw (and you might want to look on there for the guns you are considering, I know that they stock them)

I just checked bud's, the Oracle is priced at about $640 (with credit card) and ships free.

The S&W's start around $800

you would be very pleased with any of these guns mentioned, have fun!

huh?

Whoops-I meant the FFL fee.
I will likely shoot <500 rounds/year. Just guessing. I'll use my .22 for when I want to go nuts. I'm not rich :p
Range, 100-300 maybe. Doubt I'll get much longer out of it.

The oracle at cabelas is a 5.56, which looks like it is more at buds. Or do they all do 5.56?

Bear in mind a 16inch light contour barrel is generally going to be the least accurate rifle around. As barrel length and weight increase generally so does the accuracy of the rifle.

Black rifles chambered in smaller NATO calibers were designed to be shot under 500 yards. Anything over 500 yards and ballistics wise there are better rounds out there in the AR platform (.243,6.5 Gren, and 308 being the most obvious IMHO).

Either of these guns should suit you well and the great thing about black rifles is you can always change the configuration as you see fit. Once you have a complete lower in your hands it can be very easy to configure as you grow and learn.

I just picked up a NIB Spikes tactical midlength, w magpul rear sight & t-shirt, for $825 out the door including all taxes and fees. That was the best deal I could find for the options I wanted. That said I know a lot of people with the S&W's that run em hard and love them.

I just got a DPMS Oracle about a month ago and so far I love it. I think I only payed like $630 total for it brand new. I compared it to my buddies S&W M&P15 and they looked, felt, and shot exactly the same.

Hi,
I am not sure what you mean with semi-long-range shooting but I am going to guess you want a sub-moa AR with a nice twist of rate for the best bullets. Long range is past 600yards.

If you want a super accurate AR and to try past that and achieve something you need I suggest a National Match barrel. You can get everything the same and for example the RRA national match in with wylde chamber. With this you will enjoy the AR in the bench more if this is what you like. Also their 2 stage triggers are pretty good for about the same cost.

Most AR's are pretty good ( I have 7 of them) but one of these will give you much more if you like precision. Good loads and a good scope is a must so the carbine is just one more thing in the entire equation.

Cheers,
E.

I bought the Oracle a couple weeks ago and I am very satisfied with the quality. I saw them listed at Bud's gun shop for $604 Sportacle and $614 Oracle not sure about shipping though. Either way they are both good rifles.

I saw you want to do only 100 to 300 yards and do not need long range or to be so accurate.
Also as someone mentioned if you can get an M&P 15 for the cost of the oracle then I would agree, do it.
Also consider del-ton. They are milled (like Rock Rivers) in the same place as the colts and they are coming out consistently up to spec. M16 carrier, MP bolt, a stacked key, and shrouded firing pin and everything the way it should be. You will be surprised how many cheaper ARs come out of spec. I have them all squared day one.
Anyhow for that kind of shooting (rounds/year) do not worry too much or you will go crazy with all the replies here.
Cheers,
E.

+1 For Del-Ton

I have a 20" Del-ton. At 300 yds, I can shoot clay pigeons and then the pieces of the broken pigeon. I love this gun. I put it together myself in about a half an hour from a kit.

With shipping and the transfer fee, I have about 600 in it for just the rifle. Another 150 for optics and mounts.

The only bad thing I can say is it took about 3 weeks for Del-Ton to ship it to my FFL.
