What I want is a rifle with a barrel of 16 to 22 inches with either iron sights or a scope, either bolt or semi, that totals around or under 500. Right now I am considering either a Savage or a Saiga, but I am open to suggestions. I will be mostly using this for hunting and plinking and I really like 223.

You might be able to find a used Mini-14 in roughly that price zone. New ones are a bit more though. The Saiga is normally floating around that amount, but I don't have any experience with them first hand.

Good luck.

I would give some serious thought to the Kel-Tec SU16, which, IIRC, comes in right around US$500.00.

CDNN had the Howa Varmint/Targer on sale. $389... Scoped for $30 more.

Accurate, good trigger and tough. A little heavy though which I prefer for its use for me. I really like mine in .308

The Savage Axis in 223 has a 1-9 twist barrel. Best accuracy is with Hornady 68gr match bullets or Sierra 69gr. Have shot as light as 50 gr. The 55gr fmjbt works as well.

I thought all Savage triggers were adjustible? Is the Axis a newer version of the Savage 110? A buddy of mine had one quite a few years ago, and I'm certain that it was a real simple adjustment. Just a thought.

My local Wholesale Sports had an old model Weatherby Vanguard Sporter on the rack, brand new for $379.95. Heck of a good deal, if you ask me. 24" sporter barrel, 1 in 12" twist, reliable smooth "Howaby" action. If I hadn't already busted my guns budget for the next 3 months or so, I would have grabbed it myself.

I saw a Savage model 25 in .223 at my local gun store for......Well, It was a little over $500. But it was a nice rifle; It had a true American Walnut Stock on it with a black forend cap; an Accutrigger, and it was just a really nice rifle. Light Weight too. Definitely a step above the Axis. But that model 25 was sweet; I thought seriously about buying it. But I don't really need another rifle.

I just bought a Mossberg MPV for $525. Overall I am impressed with the rifle and it's ability to use AR magazines is a very nice plus.

The Axis is not adjustible. Its an entry level (cheap) rifle that can be ordered with a 3x9 variblle scope. Group with the match bullets are averaging under 1" @ 100 yds. Some of the Hornady 68gr group under 1/2" 5 shots per group. 20 shots for an average. Benchrest prep of brass.

I would get either a stevens or a howa. The howa can be had for 500 with a nikko stirling scope which is a good combo. The stevens is cheaper and could be coupled with a redfield scope for about 500. I try to buy howa or weatherby rifles when possible. I've found that they outperform all the other production guns out there. I've had ruger, savage, remington, mossberg, cz, and marlin, but my howa and weatherby are both still around. If I wasn't worried about accuracy I would get the saiga for the fun factor. Other than that I have a lot of fun setting up an empty 22-250 case and hitting it at 200 yards with my 22-250 howa or 257 weatherby s2.

I bought a new Weatherby vanguard S2 in 223 for 449 at Bass Pro. If you sign up for their credit card, you can take 10% off your first purchase -- brings your price down to just over 400.
