Help me select a rifle in .308

The OP should buy a Steyr SSG 69 PII, and then top it with a 3.5-15X50 Nightforce. That should do it. At least I like mine really well.

If you don't want that much tied up in rifle and optics it's hard to beat a Remington 700.

Sorry but for a first time buyer the Savage will get the most bang for the buck both puns totally intended. The Savage Bolts in .308 are not so exorbitantly priced that the OP will be out too many paychecks to get one and will deliver enough performance to keep them interested in continuing the sport of shooting.
I know my opinion is like all others it stinks like a you know what and we all have one of those too.
But I would go with the Savage. Stevens 200's and Mossberg 100's have too many knocks against them IMHO.

To put Vicdotcom's mind at ease, I love to buy and trade guns sooooo here's my list so you know it's not based on one gun. Browning A-Bolt from the White Gold Medallion down to the regular A-Bolt cal's 30/06, 308, and 300 Winn Mag. I think their great guns just over priced, Remington nice gun fair price. Ruger another nice gun just a bit over priced. Savage nice gun nice price. Tikka a whole lot of gun for under $500.00 Sorry Tikka's my pick, laying it over a sleeping bag for my rest I put 3 Winchester Power Point 150gr bullets inside a penny at 100 yards. Not saying the other's won't do that, but I think for the money you can't hardly the Tikka T3 thats only about $100.00 more then the Savage.

Wow!! what great response to my original question...

for those of you who posted - thank you, this is exactly what i wanted when i asked the question - now i have a bunch of rifles that i can research.

to answer some of the other questions:

I want a bolt action rifle
I really will be using this rifle almost exclusively for plinking and learning to shoot long range. ( i currently have a bunch of handguns and an ar15 that i haven't ever shot at the rifle range, only the outdoor handgun range)
I would like to keep the cost of the rifle less than $700 and then spend around the same on the scope.

Please keep the opinions coming!

Well if thats what your wanting to do i would try to find a remington 700 sps varmint or a police if you can find one under 700 "a remington 700 police that is" and put one of the bushinell elite series scopes on it, Or even a SWFA super sniper great scope for the price you wont have a problem with the fixed power since you will be at a range. You also get great out of the box accuracy with the remington 700 series and if you go with the police you get a good shooter, heavy barrel, and a decent stock. Spend the rest on ammo to practice practice and practice!!!
